My suggestion...just start with a simple sponge filter and wash it every other day under the tap and water change every 3 days and maximum keep 3-5 pieces small goldfish. Learn the art of water change and how to keep the fishes healthy and alive and in the process groom them using water, food and light.
My suggestion wash under tap the sponge filter...the idea of sponge filter is to use it to draw all the waste into the sponge and wash away....sponge filter not to be used as cultivator of good bacteria...from experiences as much as you use sponge filter to cultivate good bacteria to keep water clean, the amount of parasites that will also grow with the good bacteria will eventually cause more problems. |

For example one good observation if water foul is to look at the side of the tub or tank...if you see foams/bubbles or if you put your nose close to the water and smell pungent and not normal fishy smell...water getting bad. Just my opinion from past "observed" experiences. |
