bad luck with plants

I have some kind of fern. and they keep turning brown. and have sand all over them. thye look actually really bad..

i dont know that much how to keep live plants.. whats the basics and whats causing my plants to become brown?

Your lightings may be the main problem.Can I know the wattage of your light set?
