Hi,

Welcome to the hobby. I also started my first marine tank a few months back and recently brought an IQ5 as a planted shrimp tank for my office.

As IQ5 is an acrylic tank, I would not suggest placing the liverock close to the tank walls as acrylic get scratched easily, especially by the sharp liverocks. Perhaps you can have fewer liverocks to make the tank more open.

My second suggestion is to get those media that promote the growth of denitrifying bacteria instead of using the media provided in IQ5 since the nitrate problem plagued my tank for quite some time with algal growth. For acrylic tank, removing algae on the wall will be difficult without scratching the tank.

Hope you find my comments useful!

Welcome to this hobby.

I would advise replacing the coarse coral chip bed with fine coral sand(grade c1,c0) instead. The gaps between the coral chips would trap alot of detritous and this would lead to high levels of nitrates in future. I've made this mistake before and resulted in having to battle high nitrates.

For added stability to the rockwork, you can bury a portion of the liverock into the sandbed. This would help improve the stability of the rockwork.

Asides from the prevention of nitrate build-up, i think fine sand would also make the tank look more nicer =)
