i have some stringent requirements in my stock choices though ...and i broke one of them today! went to pasir ris and ah beng has quite a few harlequin tusks. fat and healthy and about half the price i used to see them at, so i bagged one. once it was in the tank though, the grouper started beating the tusk up. managed to scoop the tusk out quickly and hold it in the sump while i now try to remove the grouper. any tips? you guys can see my rockscape on the first page. i'd really rather not have to remove the rocks to get the fella out, that's a big headache for any reefer. earlier i tried to hook it with a piece of threaded shrimp. bugger very cautious and even when he took the bait, too fast to pull him out |

insomnia update
went ahead and removed some water and rock to net the grouper. grouper in sump now and harlequin tusk in display. problem is now, the tuskfish seems to be ill. very lethargic and listless, almost not swimming at all when first added into display, getting blown about by the wavemakers. a very bad sign. it is now settled close to the tank floor. upright and breathing regularly, but still looking stressed. i dont have testkits other than for PH [which is fine, about 8.0] right now, but after a long period with my tank empty i'm betting my nitrates are pretty high. okay for groupers but not wrasses it seems. will get testkits at serangoon north or aquamarin tomorrow. hope it makes it though the night. how big is it?
is a breeder box trap big enough for it? put some food in it let it go in and shut it off.. though not all of them are so stupid but most are! erm yeah seen the western blue devil in person... i am more into reef so yeah not really interested in it. but since u guys like such predatory fishes can try it out.. they have already tamed it to pellets though |

i have netted the grouper out [at the expense of messing up the rockwork a bit] but now have a bit of a water quality problem. really feel like throwing in the towel, after all i've tried and failed to do with this tank. first started with FOWLR, then semi reef, then FOWLR again, and now predators. i can't afford a proper skimmer, let alone a fish like the blue devil. |

one last update for now, then i won't be messing with livestock so much as working on water management [must try and better the live support system ]
the tusk has made it though the first night and in fact ate some mysis this afternoon. still not 100% settled yet but i have much hope. with the addition of the harlequin, i'm thinking of whether i should keep my grouper as i have the tusk which "chews" its food. to keep feeding simple i might stock other "chewers" like triggerfish. also eyeing juvenile gray morays. will update if/when something happens. |

stocking predatory fishes is always a headache, I find that the best method is to get all yur stock at once or at least place them in other tanks first and introduce them all at one go into the final destination tank...... oops I mentioned the word "final destination".... morbid
