My outdoor setup comprises:

1) 3' by 3' by 9 inches FGT with hole drill at the top to prevent overflow
2) No gravel
3) No filtration - Just threw in couple of water lettuce (3 big ones).
4) Filled with rain water. This few days heavy rain so manage to fill FGT almost to the drain hole
5) Brought my son to mainland for "longkang" fishing and manage to catch around 40 fishes mixture of guppies and platies.

Do not understand why when i introduce the fishes, next morning 6 died. That same evening 4 more died and by this morning another 10 died.

Is it because the tank is not cycled yet? Or the sudden heavy downpour casue water parameters to swing wildly?

Thinking of getting some hornwort to control the nitrites? Any other submerged plants to recommend that is suitable for outdoor pond?

Any other advice?

Thanks

use mini frogbits and duckweeds.
if you dont trim thehornworts, the fishes tend to get tangled in it and die.

1ft height is nice to submerge some flowerpots so you can grow plants like swordplant, pennywort, lotus or lily etc. Up to your imagination. Can also go for fish like 3 spot gourami. Maybe try some other methods to scare away birds so you don't need the netting. Watch out for mynahs especially.

Thanks for the advice. Do local LFS carry frogbits or must go to fish farm?
Anyone has spare to let go?

BTW, can beneficial bacteria grow without gravel or filter, or they need a medium to grow on? Should i get a sponge filter to aid in BB cultivation?

Pure rainwater? It's acidic. The pH of rainwater over at my side is abt 5.5. That could be the cause of death. Did you acclimatise the fishes?

Possible but not much. BB needs surface area to grow. Without gravel, filter, media, means less surface area. But that's just my 2 cents. Maybe the pros here can advise better. Anyway with regard to my earlier post, can try adding some coral chips to buffer pH (if it's a pH issue)

ur tank is definitely not cycled yet hence the fishes died.
rainwater is not totally clean and fish-safe. many impurities and chemicals.
there are free floating bb and media-colonised bb. u might want to consider just throwing in a few pcs of CR into ur fgt.
