Default Fined For Evading GST on Luxury/Branded Goods

Woman fined more than S$32,000 for failing to declare branded goods
20 Sep 2018 06:58PM (Updated: 20 Sep 2018 09:27PM)

SINGAPORE: A 42-year-old Singaporean woman has been fined more than S$32,000 for failing to declare branded goods she bought overseas, said Singapore Customs on Thursday (Sep 20).

Tammy Tien Mi was sentenced to a fine of S$32,892.78 after she pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to declare taxable goods brought into Singapore.

On Jan 27, 2018, Tien arrived at Changi Airport from France. She was stopped for checks by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers. When asked if she had anything to declare, Tien replied "no".

Her four luggage bags were then put through an X-ray scanner, and images of several handbags were seen. The ICA officers referred Tien to Singapore Customs for further investigation.

After inspecting Tien’s bags, Singapore Customs officers found a total of 30 luxury goods. These included handbags, shoes, coats, dresses, scarves and other accessories worth more than S$469,890 that Tien had bought from various boutiques in France.

The total amount of Goods and Services Tax (GST) payable for the luxury goods amounted to S$32,892.78.

Tien made payment for that amount, which is on top of the fine that she was handed by the State Court, said Singapore Customs.

“It is the responsibility of all arriving travellers to make accurate and complete declaration of the dutiable and taxable items in their possession for duty and GST payment,” said Singapore Customs.

Under the Customs Act, those found guilty of failing to declare dutiable and taxable items can be fined up to S$10,000, or an amount equivalent to the tax payable, whichever is the greater amount. They may also be sentenced to jail for up to 12 months.

Woman fined S$5,500 for evading GST on designer goods bought in Paris
18 Jul 2018 06:46PM (Updated: 18 Jul 2018 06:50PM)

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean woman was fined S$5,500 on Wednesday (Jul 18) after she evaded the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for designer goods she had bought in France and intended to sell here, said Singapore Customs.
Authorities said in a media release that 25-year-old Joei Chen Si Hui landed at Changi Airport on a flight from Paris on Jan 12. She attempted to pass through the Customs green channel, but was stopped for checks.

A total of 10 branded items, including wallets, a handbag and a belt, were found in her luggage.

"Despite knowing that GST would be payable on the goods, which were worth over S$11,710, Chen did not declare them for GST payment," said Singapore Customs, adding that she was subsequently arrested.

Authorities also said that the total amount of GST she had tried to evade was about S$819.

Investigations revealed Chen had bought the items in France and had posted photos of some of them on her social media pages for sale.

Chen pleaded guilty to one charge of fraudulent evasion of GST on goods brought into Singapore. Another charge of failure to keep documents and records on goods she had imported previously was taken into consideration during the sentencing, authorities said.

Fined MORE THAN 6.7 times the GST Evaded.

Man fined S$3,700 for evading GST on 200 long dresses at Woodlands Checkpoint
03 Jul 2018 10:19AM (Updated: 03 Jul 2018 10:20AM)

SINGAPORE: A 34-year-old Singaporean man has been fined for trying to evade Goods and Services Tax (GST) on more than 200 long dresses at Woodlands Checkpoint.

Singapore Customs officers stopped the man at Woodlands Checkpoint last Thursday (Jun 28) and found that he had underdeclared the value of the dresses he was trying to bring into Singapore.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Singapore Customs said: "Further investigations revealed that the actual value was about seven times higher than the amount declared by the man. The dresses were meant for sale in Singapore and the man had underdeclared the value of the dresses in an attempt to maximise his profits."

The GST evaded amounted to more than S$370, Singapore Customs added, and the man was fined S$3,700.

"It is the responsibility of travellers to make accurate and complete declarations of all taxable items brought into Singapore," Singapore Customs said.

"Under the Customs Act, any person who fail to declare or make an incorrect declaration of taxable goods may be compounded up to 10 times the amount of duty and/or GST evaded, or charged in court."

Fined about 10 times of GST Evaded.

So, want to get lowest fine, be richer and attempt to evade GST on as high a value as you can.... $469,890 is safe bet... only fined 1 time.

Lower value, fined 10 times.

Try to bring in 1 pack of duty unpaid cigarette, fined even more.... easily $250 a packet, when the GST is no more than $1.
