Default Liverpool identify 26-year-old Serie A star as no.1 midfield target

Liverpool are reportedly set to prioritise Napoli’s Jorginho this summer as Jurgen Klopp strives to add defensive steel to his midfield.

The 26-year-old boasts a place at the top of the Reds’ transfer wishlist, with the club having seemingly identified its targets early ahead of the shortened window.

Jorginho, alongside Roma goalkeeper Alisson and a replacement for Philippe Coutinho, is being eyed up as Liverpool’s first choice no.6 acquisition, reports the Times’ ever-reliable Paul Joyce.

The Brazilian-born Italian international has emerged as one of Europe’s in-demand commodities having helped Napoli surge to the top of the Serie A table this season.

He has served as a solid and multi-faceted foundation behind a star-studded attacking cohort and marks the type of asset capable of thriving in Liverpool’s current system.

Interest in Jorginho raises more questions than it answers in terms of reigniting discussion surrounding the future of Emre Can.

The German midfielder is still yet to sign a new deal on Merseyside and could be snapped up by Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Though the club is actively working to tie Can down, there have been no signs of progression in negotiations that have stalled for the past year.

Having been experimented with as an attacking no.8 at times early on in Klopp’s reign, Can has since asserted himself as an effective holding midfielder with a licence to break forward where necessary.

Inspired displays as Liverpool’s main midfield figure have also handed captain Jordan Henderson a tough task holding down a starting spot, although his bid to do so hasn’t been helped by recurring injury setbacks.

With Naby Keita set to inject another box-to-box approach upon his arrival, the addition of a complimentary orthodox defensive midfielder would be a certain boost to the club’s Premier League and European ambitions.

Won’t la. If you see in slomo, he kick before turning back.
But accidents do happen. With Klopp around, that first miss will be his last no look.

Default Klopp's fitness update: Moreno, illnesses and more

Jürgen Klopp relished the chance to give Alberto Moreno a second appearance since December as he balances his squad options for the run-in.

The Liverpool manager lost three players to illness – namely Danny Ings, Georginio Wijnaldum and Ben Woodburn – ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with West Ham United.

But as the Reds claimed a comfortable 4-1 victory over the visitors, Klopp was able to hand minutes to Adam Lallana, Moreno and Dominic Solanke in the second half.

“It’s good. We need them all. They all used the opportunity,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I loved the situation that I could give Alberto this little sniff of a game again – because he deserves it. He trains on [such a high] level.

“We need the boys. Robbo is in fantastic shape at the moment, of course, but what happens if he gets the flu? You need the next one still in good shape.

“We cannot talk after a game and exchange excuses and say, ‘we had a problem here or there’. The boys need to be ready all the time, constantly. That’s something we really have to make sure.”

Klopp’s side climbed to second in the table, temporarily at least, with the win against the Hammers and consolidated their position in the top-four battle with 10 games to go.

The boss added: “Now we have to stay healthy because [on Thursday] we had 21 players plus goalkeepers, and then three players got ill overnight – got the flu. Hopefully we can deal with that and go again.”
