Before you jump in to keep ranchu in tank just for awhile of interest .
Try out them with basic setup .
Also in the same time , if you are ready to get a tank then you just custom 1 .

After all , I have try out many type of setup for goldfish .
I still prefer basic setup and regular water change as I learn my mistake .
Custom tank? Meaning like 421? I'm also thinking to go with a canister, prefer the full view of my tank.

This really depends on the type of goldfish you want to keep.
Since TS is mainly interested in SVR, I'd agree 1-1.5' of water depth is ideal.
For younger SVR below 3", I'd not go over 1'.

If space and budget allows, always get the bigger else you will be thinking of upgrading it soon

Yes, but must be diligence in water change. I used to keep 2 pieces in a 3 feet tank, feed 8-9 times per day when not working. 90% water change every alternate day and they grew very fast and big.
