Confirmed: LFC's possible opponents in CL last 16
Liverpool's six potential opponents in the Champions League last 16 have now been confirmed. The Reds booked their place in the knockout rounds of Europe’s elite club competition with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Napoli at Anfield. Jürgen Klopp’s men finished second behind Paris Saint-Germain in Group C, meaning they will be paired with a winner from one of the other groups in the tournament during the draw at 11am GMT on Monday December 17. At this stage, Liverpool cannot face PSG or a team from their own country - in this case, Manchester City - so they will meet one of the following six sides next year. Borussia Dortmund

Vote Robertson for CL Player of the Week
Andy Robertson has been nominated for the Champions League Player of the Week award - vote for Liverpool's left-back now. The No.26 put in a typically relentless display as the Reds beat Napoli 1-0 at Anfield on Tuesday to seal their place in the last 16 of the competition. And his performance has been recognised by UEFA, who have pitted him against Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain), Leroy Sane (Manchester City) and Guillaume Hoarau (Young Boys) for their weekly performance prize, which is decided by a fan poll. Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho appeared to have an Eric Cantona-esque “when the seagulls follow the trawler” moment as he prepared for his side's grudge match at Anfield by bizarrely comparing Liverpool's spending to interior decoration of a house.
Cod philosopher Cantona stunned the assembled press pack back in 1995 when the Red Devils icon delivered his now-infamous line comparing the media attention over his ban for kung-fu kicking a Crystal Palace fan with events involving fishermen and wildlife on the high seas. It seems that the creative juices for metaphors are still flowing freely at Old Trafford more than two decades later as the under-fire Portuguese boss spouted out a line that seemed more suited to BBC show 'Changing Rooms' than something from the changing room. Despite having a squad with the highest average wage in the entire Premier League and United having a net spend of £307.35million since the summer of 2016 compared to Liverpool's £121.9million, Mourinho attempted to suggest that the Reds are outperforming their bitter rivals (the table toppers go into the fixture some 16 points ahead of sixth-placed United) because of their recent spending in the transfer market. Mourinho said: “Is not just about the money they spend in the summer, is about many things. “Is not just about spending money and reinforcing the squad, a football team is more than that, a football team is not just about spending the money. “A football team is like a house, too, a house is not just about buying the furniture. You have to do work in the house and when the house is ready, then you buy the furniture, you spend money on the best possible furniture and then you are ready to live in an amazing house.” Mourinho – who earlier in the season delivered an angry three-fingered salute to fans referencing the Premier League titles he has won – also seemed to be falling back on past glories again to distract from his current predicament while having a dig at Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp who has lost his last six cup finals with both Borussia Dortmund and the Reds. He added: “I think trophies matter, it matters, especially when you have the potential to fight for trophies and especially when you clearly say the objective is to win the trophy. “I think sometimes to just say is not very intelligent. “But when you have the potential, you have nothing to hide, you know from day one that your potential and your desire has a relation with the potential, because to say we want to win everyone can say that, another thing is to say in a conscious way in relation to the potential you have. “But, I don't read much, I think Jurgen told already they want to win the Premier League, is their objective, is to win the Premier League.” |

Liverpool defensive injury crisis deepens as Trent Alexander-Arnold absence confirmed
Liverpool have suffered another defensive injury blow with the news that Trent Alexander-Arnold is facing a spell on the sidelines.
The 20-year-old right-back will miss Sunday's crucial Premier League showdown against Manchester United at Anfield due to the foot injury he suffered in the midweek Champions League triumph over Napoli. Alexander-Arnold is also expected to sit out next Friday's trip to Wolves and faces a battle to be fit for the festive programme. The England international has been wearing a protective boot since he was hurt in the closing stages of Tuesday's 1-0 win over Napoli. James Milner , who was forced off against the Serie A outfit with cramp, is likely to deputise at right-back for the Reds on Sunday. The versatile vice-captain also played there in last weekend's victory at Bournemouth. Alexander-Arnold's absence is a major blow for Jurgen Klopp, who has already lost defenders Joel Matip (broken collarbone) and Joe Gomez (fractured leg) until late January. Right-back Nathaniel Clyne, who hasn't played in the Premier League all season, would be the obvious deputy for Alexander-Arnold. However, he's had injury problems of his own in recent weeks and is short of match fitness, although he did play a full part in training at Melwood on Thursday. Dejan Lovren, who replaced Alexander-Arnold in the closing stages against Napoli, is set to start at centre-back alongside Virgil van Dijk against United. |

Cardiff Eye Clyne
Neil Warnock has admitted Cardiff are interested in Nathaniel Clyne. The Liverpool full-back has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield but Jurgen Klopp may be keen to retain his services until the summer with a string of defensive injuries. When asked if there was interest in the former Crystal Palace man, Warnock replied: “Yes. I know Nathaniel. I gave him his debut, a lovely lad and I know his mother well she is a wonderful woman. “The thing about that is [Liverpool] have had a lot of injuries, they are in European competition, the league and they’ve got to look after themselves. So at the moment it’s very difficult to get anybody to commit to letting us have one for definite - 100 per cent. “He’d be one on our list definitely yes, we’re looking for that position but at the moment they have other problems. “I don’t think they would bother about us at the moment, they have to look after themselves.” |
