How to treat old filter media??
Have some filter media in my old OHF (BH, CRs, bacteria house, etc). Not in use for about 1yr alr. All dried up. Thinking of reusing them.
Any bros can advise how I can treat them before using them again? Or should I even use them at all?? Feels like wasted if throw then away. Had used them for less than 4 months last time. |

If it's me I would just rinse with water and reuse. As long as the media is not crumbling I believe it's still usable.

Just rinse with plain tap water? Do I need to soak them in boiling water or salt or something? Just to make sure any trace of toxins from last use does not spill over?
Leaning toward reusing them now.. |

i personally have a habit of soaking it in hot water for an hr before using it. my reason for doing it, is to release any clog algae etc inside the media. 2nd kill bacteria. 3rd remove dust particle

OK! I rinsed it, soaked it in hot water that is concentrated with salt. Rinsed it again, and am now letting it out to sun. If you ask why I soaked it in salt--I also dunno! I think it is a habit to wash everything with salt! Hahah..

Some say boil water and soil in it to get rid of all the junk within the media home

if you soaked it in salt water, do rinse it thoroughly to avoid bringing salt into your new set up.
For me, I will just flush with tap water, remove any gunk. soak in old tank water overnight and use.
