Need some recommendation

Given your requirements, it's best to go Best Denki or Harvy Norman to have a hands on and ask the sales staff. At least you get a feel without the pressure to purchase first. Then check back here if you need specific advise on how your prefered model will do for aquatic photography. Some might have the same model and can give you good advice.

AF speed for DSLR depends on a lot of facts... and you are right, lense may be in of the many factors...

in any case, AF of dSLR is anything faster than pns

even if you choose to use manual focus, it is faster than pns still

I was thinking I zoom in on a few models before going to have a hands on.

Current models on the list is Canon S3 IS and Canon A710 IS.

Heard that S3 IS cannot cope so well in dark conditions.

But my budget is 600 plus.

The latest canon 400D is very good but a bit on the high side.

well for a budget of $600 you could get a decent point and shoot digital camera. many brands and models were suggested here.

what you could do is to go to any camera shops or those more reputable camera shops to try out the different cameras. you must like the look and feel.

have some models in mind first. you may want to read some reviewd over the internet. there are plenty.

a camera which i think is good and i like, may not be your favourite...

Personal Preference:

For choice of DSLR ... I would for Nikon (still cant get my mind off that 18-200 VR) .. then Canon (User frenly and better ergonomics)

PNS ... I would go for panasonic (Leica) ... Canon perhaps ... nothing further for performance ... unless u r keen on sleek designs ... then sony is the first up to mind but memory card ... price to performance ratio is gonna turn u off ...

AA battery for camera power? AA is gonna set u down pretty much (kinda slow charge for flashes in comparison to proprietary batts) esp when u r using flashes ... and its heavier too ...

Generally would be good to state a few "MUST" constraints ...

Would advise to get obselete models like Panasonic FZ20 and FZ30 or Canon S1 or S2 ... where stores like best denki or harvey norman will usually do clearance sale for them upon release of new model (FZ20 was priced at $650 approx a year ago believe they would do similar for FZ30)

P.S. The above 4 models FZ20, FZ30, S1 and S2 allows versatility by providing filters (CPL ... Macro - CU +4) or lens adapters (Wide angle .. Macro diotope enhancers) where u can do much creativity

I wonder why the lens in FZ 30 is not 2.8 constant? The FZ 10 and FZ 20 both also 2.8 constant right?

How much is it anyway?
