Default Question on media placement of Eheim Classic Canister

Question media placement of Eheim Classic Canister

I just bought a eheim classic and is the 1st time using it. Understand that the return is from the bottom and the will get suck up by the pump in the top cover which goes back to the tank.

eheim recommend that the filter pad be put at the 1st top layer.. but doesnt this make the mechanical filtration the last layer??

Hope someone can help.

Tank water flows in the canister from bottom then up to the pump.
The filter pad at the first top layer will traps the finest debris.

If we put the filter pad at the first bottom layer of the canister, it will get clogs faster.

So that means the blue coarse sponge will act as the mechanical filtration..

I placed a coarse sponge filter as the first layer from bottom, followed by another coarse sponge filter wrapped with dry wipe sheet, followed by the rest of the bio medias. Depending on your bio load, clogging can take place anytime from 2 weeks onwards. When my tank bioload is low, I have observed close to 2 mths of no-clogging usage. Most frequent I've experienced is once every 2 weeks.

Wash canister medias more often or add a finer wool at the 1st layer?

Easiest solution is to have a prefilter solely for mechanical filtration

Im using the eheim prefilter connected to 2217. So far need clean the sponges twice per month. Then 2 months later clean the canister. Used to clean monthly.
