If you can put a layer of fine river sand it will buried itself left a pair of eyes to ambush the prey.

I've tried to find evidence which suggests that hairy puffers bury in sand, but it seems that Congo, arrowhead and baby fahakas are the few that will actually bury.

I've read countless forum posts by Hairy Puffer owners and none have ever said that theirs will bury even when they have fine sand in the tank. So with that, I decided not to put substrate so maintenance will be easier and the tank can be kept cleaner.

I've kept a Congo before and yes they love to bury themselves. And water changing/vacuuming sand is no easy task lol.

Sharing my dwarf puffer pics
Here they are hovering above the make shift worm holder... So the worms don't bring themselves in the substrate before getting eaten!


Still fighting an algae issue...
