It took me quite a bit of reading and failures to make this tank work and keep the water parameters stable. So if you're thinking of going to nano marine tanks, be prepared to monitor tank very closely.

Some sites that nano tank info are:

http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php
http://www.nano-reef.com/

Hope it helps.

Superb tank
If u ever think of selling it, please PM me

but on a more serious note, how do u keep the water cool? Do u use a chiller? Maybe u can post a full tank shot with all the equiments like the protein skimmer etc etc

water temperature should not be an issue for my case, ranging 18-21 degree

my concern is salt level and other water parameter

i wish i can do something like law1210 tank

Mine is an office tank. So cooling done by office air-con. Though the air-con gets shut off during night time and weekends, I doubt the temperature fluctuatures a lot. If not, my clam would not have survived.

Tis tank is a custom IOS tank with filtration behind. No space to put skimmer so weekly water change and putting in chaeto helps to keep nutrient level checked.

The filtration compartment has two chambers. Inlet side, I put wool (change weekly), bio-home and Jap mat. Outlet side, I hv my return pump (800l/hr) and chaeto.

For circulation, I hv Hydor nano wavemaker and Hydor flo deflector.

To keep tank clean clean like in the pic, I now hv 4 turbo snails working. Too many for a small tank. So I'll be moving some over to spare tank to clean up that tank while the algae stock in main tank builds up.

To keep water parameters "in tip top condition", I dose Geo-Liquid during each WC. Regularly monitor PH and salinity.

wow looks like i have tons to learn

before reading this my plan was
get a tank and a high flow rate hang on filter
put sand, rocks do some simple scaping
put water and cycle the tank
lastly introduce a clown fish

water change 20% once a week
wash filter once a month

is this doable?

IMO opinion it is ok esp if you r doing fish only. If you wanna introduce corals, then u hafta watch the temperature (either chiller or air-cond room or fan if u can manage). As for fish only, u can include a live rock to help filteration. I have a similar nano tank (21 litres of water) too with 2 clowns and 1 damsel, doing very fine, water change only once a month.

water temperature should not be an issue as it is place in a 24/7 air con room
temperature range from 18-21 degree

how many types of item can i use for scaping?
rocks, live rocks and corals
any others?
if i put coral i will have to put lighting too?
that might trigger algae problem right?

btw what filter media you use for your hang on filter?

thanks

heehee that was similar to what I started with. But I cannot comment on whether it is doable on a long term basis because I cannot resist the urge to add other livestock and corals.

In the end, my hang on filter cannot take the load and I've got to upgrade to the current IOS tank.

For corals u need suitable lightings depending on the corals. Can't help u on this as I only do FOWLR. Algae will show up if there's nitrate n sunlight/artificial light. My tank is exposed to sunlight but I think I have sufficient anaerobic bacteria (3 inch gravel/coral sand) to take care of that. I also added some other plants/algae to reduce nitrate (not necessary in all case).
As for filter media, I use aqua clay (poros material) in a small netting bag and insert into the hang on filter (I discarded the original wool filter). A reasonably sized live rock in the tank helps as bio filter too.
