It depends on what flowrate you want If you are fine with a smaller flowrate, you are good to go

Wow...i love this setup, a powerful pump is needed to force water thru the media of the 3 canisters. imo more effective then using sump...but maint is abit siong.

U definitely need a stronger pump as flowrate will decrease by quite a fraction. Unless of course you don't mind.

Pertaining to this setup being better than a sump, i agree and disagree at the same time. If for a small /medium sized tank this series setup may hold more media than a sump. but for larger tanks , this cannot beat a big sump.

Simple mathematics, each 2260 holds abt 18L of media, whereas each compartment of a sump holds easily over 20L of media by volume calculation. And a sump can easily have at least 4 or 5 of such compartments, excluding overflow part and return pump side .

Flowrate of the 2260 setup depends on the final pump, where for a sump you can boost the flowrate anytime you want, with multiple pumps too.

Size for size, sump is a lot cheaper and not to mention much easier to maintain.

So if TS wishes for such a setup, the possibility of using a sump should be explored if space or tank design allows

wow the 3 canisters setup looks powerful. i wonder what is the total volume of media to hold in there and what capacity of pump is needed...

I think it's a great idea! I think you can also use the first canister as a mechanical filter and the second as a biological filter! A lower flow rate would be good in cultivating BB right?

does eheim 2260 sell without the pump? meaning only the "green dustin tub"

I think no need a bigger pump for series set up as the flowrate is dependant on the gravity flow to inlet and not how much the pump can pull...and if the pump flowrate is higher than the inlet may run the canisters empty....

my tank never drill hole for sump and using overflow box siphoning has much variable to consider hence thinking of connecting 2260 in series....now I am running them independantly....

Canisters rely on the pump pull water & gravity flow just replaces the water that has been pumped out. A 2400l/h pump would push out ~2000l/h and a 3400l/h pump would pump out ~3000l/h on the 2260 canister. You can test this by changing your 2260 pump to 1262 & there will definitely be an increase of flow.
Don't worry, the canister won't be 'run empty' because it is a sealed unit, and the inlet is way below the water surface!

Also, I feel we need a more powerful pump because with 2x canisters, there is 2x more media, & this large amount of medias cause even more resistance to the flow of water.

Since you are running them individually now, why not just keep it that way? You'll have 2x more tank circulation & can clean them separately.
