If you want your tank to look good and natural.....YES.

If you are worry about maintenance.... Then NO NEED!!

My suggestion, Lapis sand will be nice.

I put a very thin (1 cm or less)layer of sand to give a natural look, but not thick enough to cause any significant maintenance issues.

This way, it is very easy to remove all the sand when you want to change the setup or move the tank etc.

Only problem is water current or fish would shift the sand and expose the glass base easily, which would not be so pleasant for viewing purposes.

IMO fine sand looks best, river sand usually gives a nice tone that complements cichlid colouration. If not, play sand is cheap and looks almost as good but alot of washing is required.
