actually it is not the shrimps you keep that affect the gravel thickness, it is the plants you keep. so, what plants r u planning to keep with your shrimps?

Black quartz is not meant for plant, not a matter of how thick does it affect what type of plant.

black quartz can if a base fert. is use, mine is gex topped
with black quartz. the best of 2 worlds IMO

im planning to keep those hardy plants that are attached to those driftwood, and use the black quartz to cover the base of the wood. so how thick can i go?

so, u would most likely be keeping java fern or anubias.

in this case, 3 inch may be too thick. the thickness of gravel should be around the same thickness of the wood.

BTW, dont bury the whole wood inside. try to leave the surface of the wood on top of the gravel. if the stems of the plants are buried, they will start to rot.

thanks for the advice. so i can probably go with 1 inch den i guess?
