Why do Koi's jump

Occasionally my kois do this , out of the pond, normally the big ones ( 10in and above ). B'cos of this I have to place a netting on my pond.

Is this b'cos of itchiness or water condition. Thanks .

Koi jumps for a variety of reasons. If they are spook, they will jump. If they are suffering from itch, in their attempt to dislodge the parasites, they will jump too. First thing you need to do is determine the cause. If your fish are nervous, you can add a chagoi to calm them. Btw, what is the dept of your pond ?

Hi bro.. according to some research i did after experiencing skittish koi:

- water condition (main problem/ common)
- alpha koi is a scared cow! this can be a real problem.
- koi are just spooked for some reason, after 16 inches things get better.. they go from scared cows to hungry pigs

well, these are the 3 most common problems and these are the solutions

- improve filtration/ change water with aged water/ decrease lifestock(can put the real nice ones with me)
- change alpha koi/ get a bigger alpha to take over without getting rid of the current one/ if your current cow is nice, you're more than welcome to put in my pond
- improve your patience( very difficult, i overfeed mine and lost 7 import kois!) but if you're scared u cant do it, can put in my pond


well, try these options before putting in my pond bro, if still dont work, can cross out these 3 from the list and start to find other solutions.. or, you can put them in my pond!

not all chagois though.. be sure to watch them and pick the alpha... if the chagoi is a cow.. u'r in for one hell of a ride.. i did..

thank u bros, will need to go thru one by one. Some quick answers are, shallow pond, 2ft only, kois with me for more than 8 years, about 15 kois size from 5in to 15inches, trying to downsize by selling off a second batch, ( smaller ones ).

Just bought a Chaigoi, instead of calming down the rest of the koi, it created mass-panic

i have experienced some kois jumping over the past year - i lost 2 of my biggest and nicest pattern ones recently and 3 others much earlier. My issue was overcrowding - as the kois grew up from 6inch to above 24 inches, the pond that i had was clearly inadeuate - i culled off half my population and think with that, the water condition imprved greatly... hope this sharing helps

Yes bro Murphy you may have a good point there, thats why I'm planning to reduce bioload by downsizing a second time.

well i have 9 kois of between 20" to 26" in a 2 tonne pond now. There is a slightly larger than palm size red ear slider and some 10clown loaches in there and about 4 bristlenose plecos... i am using a trickle tower, ozone generator and some 25 kg of biohom to help with filtration. a hiblow with outlets into the main poind and filter chamber provides aeration. Am intending to add in a protein skimmer and am doing some research there. I tried various floating plants and giant pandan plant to help improve water quality - they helped to varying degrees but the trouble to maintain the plants is quite a hassle

this is my DIY pond, roughly 6 x 5ft, 2 fr depth, filter chamber 6ft x 18in wide, 2ft deep also. Using lots of bio balls, coral chips, green mat only. Not sure how to calculate tonnage.

Would be interested in putting in a skimmer, will it be like a marine skimmer?
