Overhead Filters for Discus
Hi all, I do know that sponge filters are best for discus.
Just wondering do you all use overhead filters for your discus? Mine gets cloudy eyes every time I use overhead filters...was wondering what is wrong? I use overhead filters becoz I travel quite abit...and I do put a little bit of coral chips along with some bio rings to maintain water PH when I travel for longer periods. What filter medias do you guys put inside the over head filters? How often do you guys clean the medias? Appreciate you input!!....thks!!!...thks!! |

The reason why sponge is preferred is because most discus keepers change water daily and they do not want bacteria to thrive in the water so no filters with media. Sponge is for sucking up fine particles not for biological filtration.

If we look at sponge and OH, definitely the OH is a much better choice for maintaining good water quality... For sponges, it's because breeders feed discus with heartmeals which will cloud the water therefore with daily water changes (a must for feeding heart meals) it is much easier to maintain.. It can also act as a BB home. For OH, can achieve better water quality as compared to sponges.... But with heart meals, it gets choke up easily and therefore making it difficult to maintain. Therefore, OH or sponge it really have to depend on what you feed them... |

Maybe due to the food that you feed, which has been in the overhead tray rotting and has been re-filtered many times back into your tank water, which results in bad water conditions? Just my thoughts.

Quite possible... Do keep washing your filter medias and don't put coral chip
