Pros and Cons for Discus fish keeping..
Hi all, was running this crazy thoughts of listing down some pros & cons for Discus Fish keeping hopefully to encourage more players into keeping this species as compare to their counterparts ...
Let me start the ball rolling here and fellow members/seniors can add on. PROs 1) elegant and demure fish 2) multi colour for selection 3) can easily breed by hobbyist at home 4) doesn't need big tank space to keep them ( eg 2 footer ) 5) non aggressive towards other tankmate 6) diet easily available , eg pellet, bloodworm and no hassle preparing them. 7) food for newborn fries are being taken care by parent fish body slime initially. 8) schooling fishes 9) simple and easy tank set up without sophisticated filtration system ,just sponge filter/air bubble will do. 10) can be kept in planted tank or just "fish alone" tank 11)... Cons 1) limited in size (up to 10" at most) 2) need almost good water to upkeep them healthily. 3) have common disease/sickness like "hole in head" etc if water n diet not taken care properly. 4) produces abundant of offsprings , resulting in lower selling value and more time/space to take care. 5) frequent water change increase cost in PUB bill. 6) doesn't show aggressiveness when eating, or chasing their prey for food.eg live feeders 7) not consider a cheap fish to keep for beginners. At least above $10 each . 8) need special food or supplement to upkeep their colour and profile . 9) not encourage to be kept with bigger fishes as they might be stressed and turn dark. 10) ... Please do contribute your pointers if can. Thank you. Simon Last edited by Nomis; 24-05-2015 at 07:43 AM. |

May I know what is their counterpart?
Thanks Besides, discus keeping can be either domestic/show strain or wild caught strain. I believe the husbandry is a little different, with different goal as well for the owner to achieve.

They are elegant to look at. See them swim has a kind of serene feeling. Just my opinion.

Actually the sponge filter can be used for any fish if you maintain the same kind of WC regime.
Tankmates wise, I've kept them with cardinal tetra and my cardinal school always get smaller by the day. At night I would here popping noises in the dark so I guess that's when they hunt them down. |

Hi!
I see you've listed pellets and fbw as food source, but I see people mostly feed beef heart? What's the benifit of feeding that? I would like to keep discuss too but cutting beef heart is abit.... Thanks for the reply! |
