imo. Quarantine the newly purchase fishes b'fore introduce them into your house tank, this can avoid many problem. cos, the newly purchase fishes may not be fast adaptive to the bact. from the house tank environment. Our presumption of good water may not be necessary good for the fishes de.

but they have survived in my tank for almost a month
to play safe i "overhaul" my canister filter earlier, hopefully there will be no further casualty |

Sudden death symptoms refer to death caused by unknown reasons. This is by far limited by advancement of science. It can occur to any organism out there. As long the reason of death is found, it will not be termed as sds anymore. Illogical that an organism will die off without any reason or trigger.
