Now, Dr M offers legal aid for Anwar’s NSC Act suit
The Malay Mail Online BY A. RUBAN The Malay Mail OnlineSeptember 7, 2016 KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — Just days after meeting with Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has directed his lawyers to provide assistance to his former rival’s bid to challenge the National Security Council (NSC) Act. When contacted, Dr Mahathir's lawyer, Haniff Khatri Abdulla confirmed that he was given instructions to offer support to Anwar's legal team on the matter. "Yesterday, Tun (Dr Mahathir) told me to speak to Anwar's (legal) team to see how we can offer our assistance in the latter's bid to stop the implementation of NSC in court. "It is not sure yet when I will be able to reach them but it will be soon," he told Malay Mail Online. Jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar has applied to challenge the implementation of the NSC Act. At a hearing for the case on Monday, Dr Mahathir had appeared ostensibly to support the legal action by the man he sacked as deputy prime minister 18 years ago and had vilified regularly since. Opposition leaders have sought to portray the meeting of the two rivals as a reconciliation, but Dr Mahathir was coy when asked if he had repaired his relationship with Anwar. Barisan Nasional leaders conversely said the meeting was a sign of Dr Mahathir's desperation to gain support for his political party and cause. |

Foreign minister defends Malaysian DPM's speech at UNGA
By Sumisha Naidu, Malaysia Correspondent, Channel NewsAsia Posted 30 Sep 2016 06:48 Updated 30 Sep 2016 06:50 ENLARGECAPTION 358 Email More KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Anifah Aman has defended Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's maiden speech at the UN General Assembly, after the latter received criticisms online for his delivery in English. "It is unfortunate that some Malaysians had levelled criticisms and had chosen to highlight the Deputy Prime Minister’s delivery of his speech rather than focus and digest the important message that he was conveying at the UN General Debate," Mr Anifah said in a statement on Thursday (Sep 29). "The UN has a diverse membership and very often, we find that leaders have delivered their statements heavily accented in their own language. What is important is that the message that they are conveying is understood and their views are put across to the members of the UN." Mr Zahid had addressed world leaders in New York at the 71st General Assembly instead of Prime Minister Najib Razak, raising concerns about terrorism, Palestine and the resettlement of migrants and refugees. However, the deputy prime minister received more attention in the nation for an allegedly rough delivery in heavily-accented "Manglish". Some critics had questioned why Mr Zahid had chosen to speak in English rather than his mother tongue and the national language, Bahasa Malaysia. Many others have slammed the backlash as being unfair and mean-spirited. Mr Zahid's daughter, Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid, also reportedly came to his defence. "He has no 'classy tongue' to impress the classy ‘Mat Salleh' Malaysian," she wrote on Instagram. "But for me, he is a classy man who is brave enough to speak and stand for what he believe, and deliver his very best as a deputy to his Prime Minister. That matters." Malaysian representatives at the United Nations have usually delivered their speeches in English. The Southeast Asian nation is a former British colony. While English is widely spoken in urban areas and taught in schools across the nation, improving proficiency levels among the young, particularly in rural areas, has been a challenge. - CNA/de Manglish??? Malaysia's Red Shirts leader says IS elements in Bersih
By Sumisha Naidu, Malaysia Correspondent, Channel NewsAsia Posted 04 Oct 2016 15:41 Updated 05 Oct 2016 00:27 VIDEOSPHOTOS 280 Email More SINGAPORE: The leader of the Malaysia's pro-Malay "red shirt" movement, lodged a police report on Tuesday (Oct 4) with supporting evidence allegedly proving that pro-reform group Bersih has links to Islamic State. Jamal Yunos, who is also UMNO Sungai Besar division chief, says he has proof that there are Islamic State elements in Bersih and that the radical militant group may take advantage of a mass rally that Bersih is planning for Nov 19. When asked if Bersih has a connection to Islamic State in Syria, Jamal answered "there is" but would not elaborate, saying details are with the police. "These are confidential documents which I feel only the police need to investigate to determine its validity . And we were confident that once we got this information, it was our responsibility as a coalition of NGOs to pass it on." Bersih is organizing its fifth mass rally with the aim of pushing for government reform and accountability, particularly after a corruption scandal plaguing prime minister Najib Razak. Later on Tuesday, Bersih chair Maria Chin Abdullah told Channel NewsAsia that she will be suing Jamal Yunos for defamation on Friday if he has not apologised for linking Bersih to Islamic State by Thursday. Last year, tens of thousands of people had taken to the streets of Kuala Lumpur clad in yellow Bersih shirts for the same reason. Jamal Yunos and his "red shirt" supporters then held their own rally some 2 weeks later, slamming Bersih as being anti-Malay, anti-Islam and dominated by ethnic Chinese who supported the opposition. - CNA/mn Malaysia really bole! |

Bersih rallies can be tourist draws: Malaysian minister
Posted 18 Oct 2016 12:54 Updated 18 Oct 2016 13:00 ENLARGECAPTION 281 Email More SINGAPORE: Rallies held by Malaysian democracy group Bersih are good for the country’s international image, said Malaysia's Tourism and Culture Minister on Monday (Oct 17). "The rallies are actually a compliment for Malaysia; it shows we have freedom of expression," said Mohamed Nazri Aziz at the launch of the World Tourism Conference in Penang. “These demonstrations and rallies are not a problem,” he said. “If people think Malaysia is against (freedom of speech), then when they come here they’ll see that the government is not trying to stop people from protesting – as long as they comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act.” In September, Bersih announced it would hold a protest rally on Nov 19 calling for the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak to allow an independent investigation into the financial scandal at 1Malaysia Development Berhad More than 200,000 people marched through the streets in August 2015 in a similar rally organised by Bersih, calling for Najib's resignation. - CNA/rw Malaysia... really.... Companies supporting Bersih rally to be blacklisted from govt contracts: Malaysian minister
By Melissa Goh, Malaysia Bureau Chief, Channel NewsAsia Posted 24 Oct 2016 17:41 Updated 24 Oct 2016 17:50 KUALA LUMPUR: As the anti-government rally by electoral reform group Bersih approaches on Nov 19, Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan warned on Sunday (Oct 23) that companies which support or fund the mass rally will be banned from government contracts. Mr Abdul Rahman, who is in charge of the Economic Planning Unit, posted on facebook and twitter that he agreed with the editor of a pro-government Malay newspaper Mingguan Malaysia that companies should be penalised for supporting illegal public rallies. "Enough is enough. The time to be soft and tolerant is over. I will boycott companies that support public rallies that disrupt economic stability in the country," said Mr Abdul Rahman. The previous four rallies by electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 saw tens of thousands of Malaysians take to the streets of Kuala Lumpur to press for institutional reforms and the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak, whom they blamed for rampant corruption and abuse of power in the country. Mr Abdul Rahman said he will instruct the Economic Planning Unit and those in charge of Public Private Partnership to vet backgrounds of companies applying for government contracts and blacklist those that support the rallies. The warning comes as the government tabled the 2017 budget last Friday which the opposition said were aimed at helping Prime Minister Najib Razak to secure votes in the next general election. Although the elections are not due till mid-2018, it is widely expected to be called next year. The 1.6 million civil servants who were among biggest beneficiaries with increase in bonuses and easy credit for housing were reminded to be loyal to the government led by Prime Minister Najib. The government special affairs department JASA’s strategic communication chief Faisal Ismail Aziz has told civil servants to quit if they plan to vote for the opposition. However, former finance minister and UMNO veteran, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said: "I don't think that's right. People can donate to any cause so long it’s not against the law or constitution. It is their right to exercise their freedom. It is a democracy. “I am not defending Bersih, I am just talking about the law. If Bersih can organise a rally under existing law I don’t think there is anything wrong with people attending it," Tengku Razaleigh added. The Bersih organisers have kicked off their nationwide convoys and plan to converge in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 19 for a one day rally to push for free and fair elections, a clean government and institutional reforms. - CNA/am good for tourism but companies will be barred... |
