dear issac
sometime
a) it is limited by the power wire length of the pump to the power point

b) if the location or position or asethetically not ideal to run a power extension to the top of the tank

c) and if one do not want to buy no return valve.

it sound and look troublesome in writing. in reality , a simple solution.
unfortunately i cannot paste any pictures and lazy to use 3rd party linkage

in fact it is recommended on some air pump manual as well for those keen to put below water level

Yes, not everyone has the ability to place the pump above tank. Not every tank has a hood cover and it makes no sense to nail the wall to hang the pump, we got to have it below water level. Before we commit to buy a one way valve, try to simulate by offing the pump to see the water backflow. Sometime it might not happen due to your setup and pump type with whatever reason. Airstone may reduce the backflow pressure, but it could still happen. An airpump tubing connected driving a filter box, sponge filter, gravel filter or none the effect is different.

hi bro, its ok, every hobbyist have their own personal preference/restrictions. just curious only
hhmm... first time i read that some manuals recommend placement below water level. care to share which brands and models? and the rationale behind their claims?

the ideal is always of course above water level.

i rephrase - some pump manual recommend the same way that i prescribe if the pump is below water level to avoid the back flow situation.

cannot remember the brand though as i dumped the one page thingy

Had tried same air pump place below and above water level before, found that air pump place above water level has longer life span. Air pressure wise no diff to my observation.

this basically functions as a one-way valve? any other benefits over the normal airstone?

It work like powerhead air venturi system.

So no back flow.
