Default Advice Needed..

Hi Bros,

I have a CRS for almost 2 weeks and when I test the PH today, it is 7.2 !!

Got a shock and tested the KH and it is 5dKH.. is this too high?

Please advice what can be the possible cause as I only have BW with moss on it and a stone with Fessiden.

Spec of tank is :

Tank size : 20am x 28cm x 28cm.
Substrate : ADA soil (Brown)
Plant : Mosses (Spiky moss, Taiwan moss and Fissiden)
Filtration : DIY Canister (With Peat moss).
Light : 18W.
Cooling : DIY Fan.
Temp : 26.5 to 27 degrees.

Thanks in advance.

I just setup a tank using Ada Aquasoil Africana, quite sick of the black color Amanzonia, redish brown look nicer to me now. After 1 day, the pH I got is 5.6. I am also puzzle why you get 7.2, if you tank is very old, likely can get 7.2 but yours is new.

I guess there is something alkaline in your tank, it can be either the rock or filter medium. Some filter medium increase pH too.

You should remove the rock fast, the high kH tells something.

Did you test the GH?

Thanks Silane for your advice.

Ha Ha, I was thinking of the black ADA soil for my next tank.

I have just shift the rock to my planted tank as the Fessiden is growing.

Should I do a water change now or tomorrow? By the way, is my KH too high, from the little paper in the box, it seems to be ok?

Don't get you: "By the way, is my KH too high, from the little paper in the box, it seems to be ok?"

What's ur tap water kH? If it is the same as your tank water, then no point change. If it is lower than your tank kH, then change.

BTW, here are some of the pic my Japan CRS friend send to me, with his permission to show. You can see CRS look well on non black gravel also. I think one is Adasoil Malayan, one is Africana. He has tempted me to use reddish brown gravel for my new tanks.

Wow, that is really nice...

I feel that the red or brown colour gravel will bring out the red colour better but the black colour one will contrast the white better. Nothing is perfect, I guess.

After I remove the stone, the KH has drop to 3dKH. Is this still too high?

I have tesetd the GH and it is so high that it cannot be measured, the water is suppose to turn green but ti never. Is there something wrong

The little piece of paper I referred to is the intsruction sheet that comes with the tester.

I have drop a leaf of ketapang leave hoping to reduce the PH..

It is getting more interesting as I have never bother so uch about this PH and KH stuff..

No need to use ketapang leave, the Adasoil will do the trick to bring pH down.

kH of 3 is find, soon, the kH will drop further.

GH too high cannot be tested? It is likely you didn't notice the change of the color. I think the GH for now is 4 or less.

Thanks, will wait till tomorrow and test again.

Thinking of using Diamond water for the water change. I tested the PH before and it is at about 6.
