BBS vs Daphnia Revisited

Guys,

All these while I have been advocating very strongly on the use of daphnia as the most preferred fry food.

Why Daphnia?
Pros
- natural freshwater food
- survive longer in the fry tank (being a freshwater creature)
- good protein source
- promotes digestive enzymes in fry

Cons
- supply inconsistent
- troublesome sourcing (esp have to travel far to get one)
- may come with nasty parasites (velvet, whitespots)

However, hand itchy and reintroduce bbs diet in some of my recent spawns. Ok, ok, part of the reason was also because I was lazy going to LFS to buy daphnia.

So how's the results? I am indeed surprised!

Why BBS compared to Daphnia?
Pros
- one of the most significant results - higher growth rate (must be HUFA)
- better palatability (maybe becoz it's a bit salty, that's why

)
- better control of supply (u hatch as much as u want)
- the bbs brings out the irid color faster than daphnia (again maybe HUFA)
- free of parasites
- comparatively cheaper

Cons
- cannot survive long in the fry tank (have to feed the right amount)
- hatching troublesome (to some but for me it's just a 5min routine everyday)
- egg shells

This comparison was based on my observation. Nothing scientific about it. So if you are as lazy as me, bbs might worth a 2nd look.

i do think eggs shell is a big prob in bbs...
unless u do decap.. mostly u will introduce some shell which coz a lot of prob to their growth.. and their salt contents can coz prob to the water and to the fries..

dap is quite x actually... 50 c... i order from supplier... 1 week 4 times.. 1month will cost me abt 8 bucks which u can buy bbs eggs which can b use up to 3 months...

but i must stress that if u got the rite supplier.. u can almost get dap everyday.. and very clean dap as well.. clean means less diseases...

btw have u all tried frozen dap... works as well... but start using bbs mix dap from birth.. then.. after 2 weeks dap oni... after another wk... dap and frozen dap and chop frozen bw... by abt 6 mths bw all the way...
its good to have some frozen dap as back up.. if ur dap supply cut off or bbs fails to hatch..

Problem 1 - Salt "Contamination"
Solution : Easy. Use minimal amount of salt to hatch bbs. I have seen better hatching results by doing so. Then I will try to siphon the bbs out into a container and add more freshwater to it before netting them to feed the fry.

Problem 2 - Egg Shells
Solution : They are some hatching dish which you could buy. Automatically seperate them for you. I never tested them and heard it's only for small amount of bbs. Personally I am not very bothered by the egg shells flaoting (which is minimal by my standard) in the fry tank.

Tried numerous time. Failed to impress the fry or maybe mine are quite a bunch of demanding fry. In fact, it clouds the tank very fast.

from my observations, fry have better growth rate when fed with daphnia rather then BBS

hi would like to contribute my experience as well.

i do use both in fact.

but i prefer and only use bbs after the mw phase for about 1-2weeks. i realise that bbs do swim slower in the tank and are definitely smaller. thus the feed is pretty successful and even with only 1runt i have in my spawn.

2nd week since free swimming then its daph for a week b4 going tbx all the way. havent lost a fry yet with this lucky combi i tried and the growth is incredible. there is no need to chop tbx by week 3.5.

as for parasites and diseases. i dont really care bout this coz while u can clean the exterior of the fry food, there is nothing you can do bout the interior.

currently, i am using daphnia cuz easier for me to use.. no need to hatch.. but i do have BBS eggs as backup
