Hi fishy_will,
Maybe a PL lighting is sufficient for your 2ft deep.
Your tank have a great deep, you can create high slope for better scaping.

Cheers!

If you get a 2nd hand MH Light for Marine people, it is not very Ex... a 150W full set will cost about $80 - $150... but you have to face the heat problem...

Fishy_will
I have a 4 x 2 x 2 tank, using 4 x 55w got better area coverage. no heat problem. MH light is intense point source thus a single MH light might not be able to cover your entire 3ft tank.

What is your current lighting?
If the black/brown spots on the nana are algae, it is very unlikely to be due to insufficient light. Nana is one of the least demanding on lighting.
Have you decide on the list of plants you want? Or just nana, moss and riccia.

getting higher the colour temperature (10,000K) PL light is not the solution to insufficient lighting
the higher the colour temperature will not compensate for the lack of it

and add in the fact, the spread and the reach is the same as a 6500K light
in terms of comparing 2 light sets of the same wattage

the solution is to get higher wattage lights
6500K will suffice

T5 is expensive and comparable with PL lights

if ur plants are not doing well due to insufficient lights, just invest in a
good high wattage PL light set

However, as goh had pointed out
wat kind of plants are u going for?
its going to decide in the light set u are looking for

if its just these few plants which makes it a low maintenance tank,
maybe u dun have to change ur lights after all

Very hard to judge As you only give a general description of tank size.
1. What's the lights used now?
2. Are you using fert, base or liquid?
3. Temperature of tank?

Since it's nana.... a pretty hardy plant.

Black, brown - damaged root, not enough fert, too hot, too cold, or water contains herbicide.

green, dark green - spot algae, prolly due to very high light.(I believe not in your case...)

Damaged root->rhizome buried too deep, rhizome cutted, burnted, skinned, etc....
