In what can be said to be a veiled threat to the West, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has told off former colonial powers, telling them not to try and meddle in the internal affairs of former colonies.

He said this in a commentary in Chinese paper China Daily, titled "Fruits harvested from seeds of trust". The article was published as Najib is in the midst of a whirlwind visit to China.

"More generally, we believe it is incumbent upon larger countries to treat smaller ones fairly. And this includes former colonial powers. It is not for them to lecture countries they once exploited on how to conduct their own internal affairs today," wrote Najib.

His remarks comes on the footstep of concern from the US and the West over Malaysia's documented slide into worsening human rights abuses and increasing limits on freedom of expression and press freedom.

All these years he too 'busy' and 'hungry'.... now suddenly SUCKING UP to China and copy Durterte telling the west off.

Approximately 7,000 gathered at Stadium Mini Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur this morning to protest Myanmar's persecution of the Rohingya.

Sharing the stage at the rally was Prime Minister Najib Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and PAS Youth chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Aziz.

The rally titled ' Solidariti Ummah Rohingya' was a colourful affair of participants in PAS' green, in red and the local Rohingya community.

The crowds chanted "free the Rohingya' and 'Rohingya needs your voice to end ethnic cleansing'.

Yesterday Wisma Putra rebutted the Myanmar government, which was reported warning Malaysia to stay out of its affairs, by saying the rally would proceed as the issue also affects the security of the region

He should be able to stay on another term, the only gp that can flip against him is his own party.

Zaid joins DAP to prove party is not anti-Malay

KUALA LUMPUR — In what is seen as a boost to Malaysia’s Democratic Action Party (DAP), a former minister from the ruling United Malays National Organisation (Umno) announced on Tuesday (Feb 7) that he was joining the opposition party.

Mr Zaid Ibrahim said on Tuesday that he aimed to prove that the predominantly Chinese party was not anti-Malay, as claimed by its detractors, including Umno.

“One of the reasons I wanted to join this party is (my) hope (that) more Malays would join DAP,” the New Straits Times quoted him as saying.

“Leaders must be honest, fair and aspire to do justice, and I believe DAP can and has succeeded in achieving all this,” he said. “I see DAP as an effective government that can contribute towards solving our nation’s problems.”

Analysts, however, told TODAY that Mr Zaid’s political experience would not help the DAP make inroads into Umno strongholds, due to the former minister’s elitist image.

Mr Zaid was Malaysia’s de facto law minister during the administration of former Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2008, but he resigned from the post the same year as a protest against a spate of arrests under the Internal Security Act, resulting in his exit from Umno.

A year later, Mr Zaid joined opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), and contested and lost in the 2010 Hulu Selangor by-election.

Later that year, Mr Zaid quit after pulling out of a race for the party’s deputy president post and went on to form his own party, Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air (Kita). He stepped down as Kita president in 2012 amid internal squabbles.

Mr Zaid’s track record of switching parties was noted by Malaysia’s opposition leaders, with former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad expressing hopes that the former minister would remain in the DAP.

“I hope he will stay in DAP a little bit longer. The problem is that in this country, we have a race of frogs. These frogs, they like to hop here, hop there and when I try to catch one, they’ve ... hopped somewhere else,” he joked.

Dr Mahathir left Umno last year to form Bumiputera-centric party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), after a fallout with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, whom he accused of corruption following the news of RM2.6 billion (S$831 million) being deposited into Mr Najib’s private accounts, as well as of financial irregularities in state investment firm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang on Tuesday said he was confident Mr Zaid would be an asset to the party. “People asked me if this time, Zaid will stay, and how long will he stay in DAP? I am sure that he will act as a team player and not a prima donna,” he said.

Analysts, however, were pessimistic that Mr Zaid would be able to help DAP boost its popularity with the rural Malay folks — a key voting bloc that is a traditional stronghold for Umno.

“Despite being from (rural) Kelantan, Zaid was never strong or popular among the rural Malays,” Dr Oh Ei Sun, a senior fellow at the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) told TODAY in reference to Mr Zaid’s elitist image and liberal outlook.

Mr Zaid, however, would do well if he stood for election at an urban seat, said Mr James Chin, director of the Asia Institute at the University of Tasmania.

“Zaid has strong support in the urban middle class, so that’s the best place to field him,” he said. AGENCIES
