Default Team news: Huddersfield Town v Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp expects to have no new injury problems to contend with ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Huddersfield Town on Tuesday.

Adam Lallana and Ragnar Klavan are out of the Premier League fixture at the John Smith’s Stadium having missed Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to West Bromwich Albion due to a muscle issue and illness respectively.

But, during his pre-match press conference, Klopp indicated that the players who featured for the Reds at the weekend will be available.

“I’m not sure in the moment, it’s really close. We have again a few knocks, different things, but nothing decided so far in this moment,” said the manager.

“It looks like all the players who were available for the last game are available again, but not 100 per cent.”

Huddersfield boss David Wagner, meanwhile, has an almost-fully fit squad to choose from, with only Elias Kachunga (knee) definitely out.

Danny Williams (hip) is a doubt, though, after he picked up a knock during the Terriers’ 1-1 draw with Birmingham City at the weekend.

Wagner’s side sit 14th in the Premier League, having failed to win any of their last six top-flight outings.

Default 25 goals in 32 games: Another Salah landmark

Mohamed Salah's second-half strike in Liverpool's FA Cup tie with West Bromwich Albion was another milestone moment for the No.11.

The Egyptian's Kop-end effort may not have been enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat, but it did represent a landmark goal.

Salah's 25th goal for the Reds came in just his 32nd appearance for the club - making him the fastest player to reach a quarter of a century for more than 102 years.

Only George Allan (1895-96) and Fred Pagnam (1914-15) have achieved the feat in fewer games during Liverpool's history.

Salah has enjoyed an incredible debut season at Anfield, having already matched Daniel Sturridge's club record for 10 Premier League goals in the fewest number of games and equalled Roger Hunt's record of 23 strikes in a season before the turn of the year.

Default Liverpool receive Thomas Lemar message - for both January and the summer

Liverpool have been told unequivocally Thomas Lemar is not for sale in January, furthering the likelihood of no new incomings at Anfield in the next 48 hours.

Jurgen Klopp admitted Philippe Coutinho would not be replaced this month, believing the 'solution' for the remainder of the season resides on Merseyside rather than the transfer market.

Lemar remains a target for Klopp but not until the summer, with Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev reiterating his club would not be doing business for the 22-year-old in January.

Vasilyev, however, refused to rule out the sale of the French international beyond the current campaign.

"He will stay at Monaco until the end of the season 100%," Vasilyev told French radio station RMC.

"If Liverpool or Arsenal come with a big offer before the end of the market? This is not relevant.

"We will say no because the objectives are clear.

"Without important players like Lemar, we will not succeed."

Klopp had earlier detailed how Liverpool would turn to what they already have at their disposal in order to fill the gap left by Coutinho's departure to Barcelona.

"Philippe Coutinho is not going to be replaced in this transfer window," Klopp said. "It's about using our own tools, players and tactics.

"The solution is not out there on the transfer market at the moment. We always have open eyes but we really think we have to use our players.

"In the long-term, we will do a lot, in the short-term, I don't think so."

Default Curtis Jones takes next step at Liverpool after signing first professional contract

Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton were among the rival clubs he snubbed

Talented Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones will today sign the first professional contract of his blossoming career.

The highly-rated midfielder will mark his 17th birthday by penning a deal to keep him at his boyhood club until the summer of 2020.

It's reward for the impressive progress made by Jones, who grew up in the city centre and has been on the books at the Kirkby Academy since joining the under-9s.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Everton were among the rival clubs he snubbed when he opted for Liverpool.

The England youth international was only 15 when he was first invited to train with Jurgen Klopp's senior squad at Melwood.

Jones was fast-tracked from the under-16s to the under-18s last season and he has flourished under the guidance of manager Steven Gerrard this term.

He has scored 15 goals for the under-18s - helping them mount a title challenge in the Under-18 Premier League and reach the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League.

“This team is built around him,” Gerrard said recently.

“He’s a top talent. He’s got that quality to create something out of nothing."

Jones, who earlier this month was handed his debut for Liverpool Under-23s, says playing for the Kop legend has helped take his game to the next level.

"I would definitely say I’ve got better under him," he said.

“He’s a great man, Steven. Every time you’re unsure of something you can go to him, he’ll always be there."

Markovic a Swan?

Lazar Markovic’s agent is flying in to complete a £15 million transfer to Swansea, according to Football Insider.

It has long been apparent that the Serb has no future at the club, and now it seems like the Reds will be parting with a player they signed from Benfica for £20 million in 2014.

If you ask me, a £5 million loss isn’t too bad a deal. He hasn’t featured for the Reds in a long, long time, and didn’t exactly set the world alight at Hull last season.

Good luck to him, though. He seems like a pretty decent guy.

Knowing Liverpool’s luck of late he’ll be a superstar in a few years!

Default Liverpool legends pay respects at Tommy Lawrence funeral service

A chance encounter between a BBC reporter and an elderly gentleman on a Liverpool street went viral.

The reporter was Stuart Flinders, stopping members of the general public at random to ask if they remembered a famous 1967 FA Cup tie between Everton and Liverpool. The elderly gentleman was Anfield legend Tommy Lawrence, and he didn’t just remember the tie ... he had played in it!

The clip was eventually watched by more than eight million viewers in more than a hundred countries, including Tommy’s wife Ellie.

But such was the humility of the Anfield legend that he even hadn’t told his wife he might pop up on the evening news that night!

The much-loved goalkeeper was laid to rest today at St Elphin’s Parish Church in Warrington.

Three of Tommy’s grandchildren delivered moving tributes - and broken-hearted grandson Ryan Murray used the anecdote to underline his grandfather’s endearing characteristics.

“He told me he thought it was a wind-up, and when he got home, being the humble man he was, Tommy didn’t even mention it,” said Ryan.

“So you can imagine how much of a surprise it came to his wife Ellie when she sat down for tea and saw that her husband was the main feature on BBC North West Tonight.

“When she questioned Tommy about it he replied ‘Oh yeah. The BBC interviewed me today.’

“That story embodies all the characteristics of Tommy, from the pride in his eyes when asked about Liverpool, to the humility shown not to see his interview as a big deal, when it was trending on Twitter and translated into more than 100 different languages.”

Given his status at Liverpool Football Club, legends from several Anfield eras were present to pay their respects.

Ray Clemence, another goalkeeping legend initially kept out of the Liverpool line up by Lawrence, was present along with former Reds goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan.

Legends from the opposite end of the pitch, Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Roger Hunt, Ian St John, Robbie Fowler and Howard Gayle were in attendance, as were Ron Yeats, Phil Neal, Gary McAllister, Doug Livermore, Phil Thompson, Chris Lawler and Ronnie Moran’s son, Paul.

Liverpool’s hierarchy was represented by Chief Executive Peter Moore, Director of Communications Susan Black and Craig Evans.

Everton ambassador Ian Snodin paid his respects from across the park, while Liverpool FC Club Chaplain Bill Bygrove delivered a moving eulogy.

“Everybody says the same thing about Tommy Lawrence,” he said “an outstanding goalkeeper and a lovely man, genuine, no side to him, no phoney baloney, unpretentious, real, generous, open-handed, open-hearted, with time for his family, his friends and fans, whether they were for or against him.

“And he was a gentleman, courteous, thoughtful, humble, honest. Isn’t that a lovely thing to be said about an individual?”

Ayrshire born, Tommy originally supported Ayr United.

Chaplain Bygrove added: “They are called The Honest Men. He could have been called that, couldn’t he?”

By a quirk of fate another footballing pioneer, Cyrille Regis, was being laid to rest at the same time as Tommy.

Regis was a pioneer for black footballers during the 1970s, while Tommy was the original sweeper keeper a decade earlier.

But regardless of his qualities as a goalkeeper - and two league championship medals, Liverpool’s first FA Cup winning goalkeeper and three Scotland caps were testament to that - it was his qualities as a humble, disarming, charming man which were brought to the fore.

During his eulogy, chaplain Bygrove added: “I want you to come with me to Newchurch Primary School in Culcheth. It’s teeming with rain, the pitch is muddy but there are gangs of kids playing football - and in the middle is Tommy, diving to the left, diving to the right.

“The kids went home that day saying ‘I had a shot against a Liverpool legend’.

“They did .... and Tommy was 70-years of age!

“He never lost his passion for football.

“But his biggest passion was his family. He loved his family.”

Tommy’s extended family was everyone connected with Liverpool Football Club - and they loved him as much as he loved them.

Rest in Peace Tommy Johnstone Lawrence.

Born 14 May, 1940, in Dailly, Ayrshire. Died 10 January, 2018, in Warrington, aged 77.

Default Liverpool youngsters Ovie Ejaria and Lloyd Jones set for January transfers

Liverpool midfielder Ovie Ejaria is set to join Sunderland on loan for the rest of the season with defender Lloyd Jones poised to make a permanent move to Luton Town.

Jurgen Klopp has decided to sanction a loan deal for Ejaria, who hasn't featured for the first team so far this season.

The 20-year-old is expected to complete a temporary switch to the North East prior to Wednesday's deadline and will bolster the Black Cats' push for Championship survival under Chris Coleman.

Jones is set to part company with Liverpool - some six-and-a-half years after he joined the Academy from Plymouth.

The 22-year-old centre-back is wanted by League Two leaders Luton. Jones was named on the bench by Brendan Rodgers away to Fulham in May 2013 but never made a senior outing for the Reds.

He has previously had loan spells with Cheltenham, Accrington, Blackpool having arrived at Liverpool from Plymouth.
