Newbie 3x2x2 setup :)
Hi all! Tonight I'll be ordering my 3x2x2 tank to embark on my marine journey after some dabbling with my office pico/nano tank. The office tank helped dispel my years long fear of starting marine (that it would be too troublesome) so finally I'll be taking the plunge.
As with my office tank, before I actually start the tank, I'd like to ask for comments and advice on my planned setup. My plan is to start simple, but to have what I need in place so that I won't need to upgrade in future if I decide to move to more advanced stages of the hobby. Here's the plan: Tank 3x2x2 with cabinet + sump and front panel crystal glass Filtration 1st compartment - Filter sock + Bubble Magus NAC 7 Skimmer 2nd compartment - Biopellets + Seachem Seagel 20-30kg Live Rock (in tank) Flow Return pump - Eheim 1262 (3400L/hr) Wavemaker - Hydor Koralia 2 - Is this sufficient? Lighting Maxspect Razor 160W Substrate Carib-Sea Arag-Alive Bahama Oolite Chiller Hailea 66a (1/4HP) Would the above setup be ok? Also, what livestock could I fit into a 3x2x2? I intend to at least keep a pair of percula clowns (mandatory requirement by my wife, who loves Finding Nemo) as well as 1 Coral Beauty and 1 Flame angelfish (intend to introduce both at the same time to reduce aggression. Have done some research and found many reports that in a 3x2x2, 2 dwarf angels can be kept). What else would you recommend to finish off my livestock? For corals, I intend to start off with soft corals and some easy LPS. Hopefully in the long and distant future I'll be able to try my hand at SPS too. |

Haha thanks for the comments everyone. The tank has been ordered so there's no turning back! And yes, I like to make sure I plan well before I plunge into any tank setup, then impulse buys (yes I still make those) will be limited to fish that suit the setup.
Dominik, yep I'm going for brand new equipment. Bad experiences with buying 2nd hand previously so I'd rather just pay more for peace of mind. Always end up regretting and spending more when I buy 2nd hand. Anyhow, here's the expanding stocklist: Coral Beauty Flame Angelfish Percula/Ocellaris Clownfish x2 Fairy/Flasher/Mystery Wrasse (haven't decided which type yet) Green Chromis x3 Copperband Butterflyfish Shrimp Goby + Pistol Shrimp pair I want a good mix of colours...so I've got blue, orangey-yellow, orange, red, green and copper...maybe a royal gramma for some purple too? That's 10 fish, though most are small fish. Of course I won't add all in at once but spread it out over a few weeks to make sure the filtration can adjust to handle the bioload. I intend to put in the more peaceful fish first (Goby, Butterflyfish, Chromis, Wrasse) and leave the clowns and angels to the last since they're the most territorial. |
