This new configuration is convenient to the many OHF users out there. However the costs seem a little prohibitive or maybe I should say its not as cost effective as the 8x8x4 inch block.
8x8x4=256 cubic inches; cost is $75, so its 29cents per cubic inch.
11x6x1.5=99 cubic inches, cost is $60, so its 60 cents per cubic inch.

Another option I was considering was to buy the 8x8x4 inch block and cut it into size to fit into the OHF box, but the downsides are more effort required and it might not be as neat as the off the shelf configuration.

Just my thoughts, feel free to chip in yours .

yea mp blocks are more cost efficient. but sawing them is a hassle.

guess it boils down to cost efficiency vs convenience

Marine pure is used mainly in marine set up. It is to mimic cultivating bb with low to 0 oxygen in thick sand bed (about 5"). As such those for marine the blocks are usually thicker.. I do agrees that the damage per block is high but if is effective and the cost is ok for some of of us... Why not? My take is.. Its still a good investment.

hmmm...if it's supposed to mimic 0 or close to that level of oxygen, than are we getting regular results that's achievable using normal media?

Marinepure is softer than Momotaro Bacteria House but is far more porous.

Some say it might erode faster than other sintered media as a side effect. Erosion however will probably take years, making it a minor maintenance expense.

Performance wise, it is solid stuff, cycling amazingly fast.

It's all I use in the bakki shower servicing my ~20 ton pond. Spheres in the shower, oyster shells in the sump. Nothing else.

Marinepure used in an OHF will host nitrifying bacteria that change ammonia to nitrite, and nitrite to nitrate due to the oxygen rich environment. Under low oxygen conditions, the larger blocks will host anaerobic bacteria deep inside that will work to remove nitrates from the water.

momotaro isnt as porous as marine pure and as such i prefer to use it under high flow conditions eg bakki showers to prevent mulm from collecting and clogging it up.

whereas marine pure is more catered for lower flow conditions so there's a chance of anaerobic bacteria to grow deeper inside the pores. the porosity also prevents it from getting clogged easily.

though nitrates wise i have yet to be able to see any results from using marine pure.
