Live Daphnia to Fries
Can I ask a noob qns?
Because i've done a lot of reading on this forum and online elsewhere and there are many schools of thoughts regarding what food to feed betta fries. I understand that once they are free swimming, we should be feeding the fries right? Because i find infusoria and microworms a hassle... Can i feed live daphnia to these fries? Reason i ask is because some say live daphnia is too big for the fries... some say it's okay. Please advise. |

Yes u can start feeding immediately. Remove both parents if u haven't already done so. Best is to hatch bbs to feed the fries though the easiest way is to buy 'live' boon....not 'frozen' boon as they are definitely too big. Some would argue that 'live' boon is too big but like we have said...there are newly hatched smaller live boon amongst the bigger ones.....so it's fine. Feed sparingly though but often so as not to pollute the water. Good luck!

I have fed daphnia to spawns from day 1 too and no problem.
When feeding I try to pick those live daphnia that are on top of the bag. So far so good. Congrats on your spawn btw |

Yea i know.. But it's so difficult to clear the "waste" from the father which is lying on the bottom of the tank... Tried using a tube to suck it out last time but it seem to have disturbed the water quite a lot, so am stuck on what to do..

You may want to add water plants to "polish" up the water for you.

Update:
I bought live daphnia for my fries. All my fries seem active and chasing them. But, the problem is that they can't seem to catch or swallow them? Spent a good amount of time observing, but did not even see one successful swallow of a live daphnia. Is this normal? Getting worried here... |

Don't worry. What you see are bigger sized daphnia. There are smaller ones among them. You can see a few hours later, all the fries will stay afloat due to stomach full after eating.

Because the water in the packet of live daphnia seems dirty, what I do is take my small net (with very very tiny holes, small enough for water to escape) to scoop out the live daphnia from the packet and then feed them. Cos the water seems dirty. Correct method? |
