The weight of the fixture and the heat produced is also a tell-tale sign of magnetic ballast..

Mine does flickers a little before the lights are ON.

But now my blue switch doesn't function, don't know whether it's the tube burnt / switch problem

Definitely it is not using a magnetic ballast as it doesn't flickers ...

Cukcuk ... It seems that this is a common problem with the new batch as it happened to my 3ft fixture too.

Confirmed with AquaMarin that can get a one-to-one replacement with the new stock this week as the manufacturer has corrected the problem.

Just produce the receipt and no questions asked .

In our case, since we change our tubes on a yearly (average) basis, it doesn't really matter. T5s were designed to last a lot longer than that more like 2 years. These are usually used in offices or factories in Europe, and are not changed until the tubes burn out. That's why they need the longer lifespan. And that's why even cheaper ballasts like the Elbirus should be fine for us.

The warm start of a good ballast actually slowly increase the intensity of the light, which will not shock ur animals out of the sudden with strong intensity of light. This is the same as
some of the reefers who on the blue light 1st, before a large quantities of lights r being introduced. IMO a good ballast will fare so much better than a cheap one,
we know that all lightings suffer spectral shift over time, if a cheap set of ballast were used would the lamp suffer the spectral shift even faster than a year time or maybe half a yr?
