Anaerobic.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactobacillus

Lactobacillus is a genus of Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic or microaerophilic, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacteria.[1] They are a major part of the lactic acid bacteria group (i.e. they convert sugars to lactic acid). In humans, they constitute a significant component of the microbiota at a number of body sites. In women of European ancestry, Lactobacillus species are normally a major part of the ******l microbiota.[

Wall of texts and so chim to me. Conclusion is really fine sponge is the best? Sometimes I wonder koi keeper uses Japanese mat and brushes and can cope with the high bio load. Guess is really workable. We use too much medias. But is hard to judge how much is enough hence if affordable then the more the better.

I really add yakult/vitagen sediment.

Imho no harm, the filter box most likely acidic conditions, good for lactobacillus.

cool. yes is acidic in the process but will not really affect the ph of the water with small amount of bacteria added. this bacteria is the same as those that remove ammonia and nitrite? i know is good for human digestion.
