WHAT IS SUBJECT-BASED BANDING (PRI)?
Subject-based Banding (Pri) provides greater flexibility for your child by offering him the option of a combination of standard and foundation subjects, depending on his strengths. For example, if he excels in English and Mother Tongue but needs more support in Mathematics and Science, he may choose to take the first two subjects at the standard level and the others at the foundation level. Such a choice will allow your child to focus on and stretch his potential in the subjects that he is strong in while building up the fundamentals in the subjects that he needs more support in. |

SBB is offered to NA streams. If the students scored A in their PSLE subjects, they can take up express level for these subjects even though they’re in NA. Maximum 2 subjects.
For example my son did SBB express for English and Math when he was in NA. For those express lessons, he had to go to another class for lessons. So now it looks like the proposal is to expand banding to all 4 psle subjects and do away with normal stream. The tough part would be the national exam at sec 4. Now after N levels, students can choose to go poly direct (foundation year) or go for O level year. One national exam at sec 4 going to be even more stressful for the weaker students |

FACEBOOKTWITTEREMAIL Jolene Ang Being able to solve mathematical problems gives Normal (Academic) student Low Jie Ying a sense of satisfaction - and even more so when her Express schoolmates approach her for help. When she was in Secondary 1, the Paya Lebar Methodist Girls' School student was offered the chance to take mathematics and Chinese at the Express level, under subject-based banding, as she had done well in those subjects in the Primary School Leaving Examination.
