Default What is Axanthic ?

Just read Fong's thread on his platinum aro and this term " axanthic " caught my eye.

Wat is the meaning of axanthic ? wat traits are they suppose to possess ?

the terms are getting too exotic for me ....

axanthic is the lack of yellow pigment in the skin

is this an English word ?

in the case for aros, wat would that then conclude ?

say an axanthic xback or an axanthic red .... wat would their traits be ?

does this mean these aros still have all the pigments, melanin except for yellow pigments ?

The Young Dragon displays characteristics not found in the common Dragon fish varieties. It has an axanthic black pigmentation along the whole length of its body, extended to the tip of its caudal fin. Another feature is the blackish highlighting the brownish ellipse of the eye. The dorsal, caudal and anal fins also display a mixture of two colours, with a hint of red and purple

i first heard of this since Panda won such a prize for such an arowana....a bit short of some colours and the eyes almost black....costly too....but i prefer the 'traditional' arowana colours.

yup. Its an english word.

In reptiles it produces a silver coloration for yellow/red areas.

In aros the effect is not tt powerful. Panda's axanthic aro is more biege in color with a clear gill plate...

Looks like albinism to me, a variation of albinism.

albinism is the total lack of colour pigmentation(melanin) and is a genetic condition, but as you can see the axanthic aro has fully black eyes... which means that it has pigmentation, but the scales are transparent, somewhat like calico goldfish...

cant really be sure till the aro is full grown....

havent seen an adult specimen yet.

the yellowish coloration could be due to the age. When young aros look transuculent so the yellowishness could be due to the color of the flesh under the scales which are clear?

or simply that the breed genetics isn't perfected yet.
