thanks for all your input and as I have quite a no of rainbow fishes inside my tank, I am thinking to just put in more rocks to boast up the ph but leave the ada soil behind.

Resetting the whole tank will be the last option as I do not have any tank to house my current fishes. The only thing I can do is to scoop up the soil slowly but it will stir up the whole tank and might affect the fishes as well.

U can still put the fishes inside a pail with tank water and airstone whilst you overhaul the tank (except filtration). Would take you a few hrs max unless its a 5ft and above tank. Your fishes should still be ok. I took about 10 hrs when I overhaul my 5ft tank....alone.

I think the two types of fishes do not go well together. The rummy nose and congo tetra are soft water fishes while the african cichlids (I assume you are referring to those from Lake Malawi or Lake Tanganiyika) are hard water fishes.

Also, based on my understanding, Lake Malawi species are boisterous fishes that like to fin nip. So if you keep them together, assuming the water parameters are fine, you are likely to find the fins of your rummy nose and congo tetra badly torn.

Maybe a better option is to have separate tanks for both!
