New citizen and PR figures in last 10 years
Fm CNA on Internet 22Nov2011
SINGAPORE: On average, 13,000 persons were granted Singapore citizenship (SC) annually from the period of 2001 to 2010. Almost 50 per cent of them came from Southeast Asia, and about 42 per cent originated from other Asian countries. Singapore citizenship was also granted to applicants from the Americas, Oceania and Europe. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean gave these figures in a written reply to Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC MP Gan Thiam Poh. Mr Teo said 48,000 persons were granted Permanent Residence (PR) status over the same period. Almost 50 per cent were from Southeast Asia and more than 44 per cent came from other Asian countries. Mr Teo noted that the total numbers of PR and SC granted annually have decreased since 2010, following a tightening of the immigration framework. - CNA/fa Last edited by AroHong; 23-11-2011 at 02:27 PM. |

According to these figures, 130,000 new voters joined us in the last ten years. I find it hard to comprehend how the number of eligible voters in Singapore increased from 1.3million to 2.1million in the last GE.
If we take away the 1million or so foreign workers, the total population of Singapore goes down from 5milion to 4million, does this mean the 130,000 new citizens + 50,000 PRs brought in 800,000 family members? Please correct me on the above as I don't have any statistics besides from memory of what I think I read in the past. Last edited by AroHong; 23-11-2011 at 02:26 PM. |

Very strange figure when the population figures increased by a million or so. Where did the increase of population derived from? Surely not from our current birth rate, so they are not revealing enough details.

New voters can come from those young ones who just turned 21, but I also think the fig not quite right, seems too little.

Yes, the figures seem too little...maybe after some months, they will tell us that the statistics were calculated wrongly, or that software upgrade bug??? Just like the narcotics case????
