One quick way to differentiate Lionhead and buffalo:

Lionhead tends to have a overall 'cauliflower' kind of headgrowth.

Buffalo head tends to have a clear seperation between the crown and the cheeks growth.

The one on the top is a buffalo head and the one on the bottom is Lionhead.

For beginner,I suggest you keep the cheapest ranchu you can find. Below $10 type. Because a good Buffalo or lionchu can fetch a price of $60 and above.

for me,I keep the cheap ones first. after keeping it for 6 months with no diseases or sickness and got the hang of doing regular water changes,I then move on to the slightly expensive ones.

Bro,I gave them up for adoption. this way,I hope to encourage the newbie to keep ranchu/gf. But I'm worried if the fishes end up at the wrong hand. :/
