very sad day for a Toman fan today ..
firstly im new to this wonderful Forum and excited to be part of it .
okay so i've been an avid Fisherman for quite some time already and has always been fascinated by the Toman / Channa Micropletis . so a week back i decided to get a small one for rearing , like a foot long . i was free today and decided to go KhaiSeng Fish farm ( Neo Tiew ) to source for one . reached there in the afternoon , as expected majority of them are giants . i was itching to get one but i know my tank couldn't keep a big daddy . and there it was ! a small Toman amongst the giant , it looked pretty good and active too . not that brightly colored yet as it was still small , around 12 to 14 inches long . i tried netting it myself , finally got it after a long time pushing away those giants . told the uncle i wanted to keep it , so he put it in the big plastic , filled water till SLIGHTLY fully covered the fish , and pump some air inside . i was very happy and took a cab home from Kranji MRT , total journey probably took an hour . i didnt really take note of the fish while traveling back , when i reached home , i took the bag out and laid it on the floor , not moving much but i thought it was normal , stress and stuff . so i started filling up my tank to the appropriate level , but SUDDNELY , i took a glance at my Toman , damn it was tilting sideways ! i started to panic and immediately shake the bag a bit , but it was still slanting . i then opened the bag and slide the fish inside my tank . god damn it was flipping the otherway , overturned . not a single movement and looked almost dead . i tried carrying it up and let it breath air but it wasnt opening its mouth . i prayed for the worst , the fish is dead , but i kept hoping for a miracle . after an hour i finally accepted the fact that its already dead . i then cooked it , not to waste it anyways . i was really very sad and puzzled as to why it happened . it was totally fine when it reached home , such a sudden change . they are such hardy fishes for gods sake , i was really heartbroke . had i released the fish into the tank earlier , it might have already been swimming happily right now , so near yet so far . perhaps the water too little ? not enough atmosphere air ? too stress and exhausted ? i dont know what to do now , if i was to try buying another Toman , i already got phobia that the same thing might happen again . thus im now considering getting some beautiful Rainbow .. any inputs ?? |

indeed, quite sad that u ate your pet-to-be
probably died due to the long trip and not acclimatising the fish properly into its new home. did u add water conditioner into the tank water? |

yea ,
but i couldn't waste it and just throw it away like that .. before i filled the tank to appropriate level , i did aged about half tank full of water the day before . also added some Genesis . but thats not the point , the fish flipped while it was INSIDE the bag .. when i panic and released it into the tank it was already almost dead . maybe it was the long trip , not enough oxygen , too many factors . also imo very likely it was cause by exhaustion as i was chasing it and having a hard time lading this single fish i wanted into the net . also with the fish uncle not handling the fish with care while packing i guessed . |

Imho there is the probability that the fish was stressed too much while being netted and then it's heart gave way.I say this because i have tried helping my son catch lonkang fish and i was ai,ing for 1 particular fish...where it go i chased...then it suddenly stopped moving it had died think could be a similar case.

it was stressed IMO.
get the small feeder ones. they are the most fun to keep. worse than a group of piranhas. |

unlikely due to the lack of oxygen or water cause they are some tough fighters and can live in conditions way worse haha . i had thought of keeping the small ones , burt im afraid they'll die before they even have the chance to reach adulthood . anyways i havent been seeing Toman Feeders anywhere . anyone saw and knows where to get them ? |

there's a petshop at tamp st 21 which has them at times. otherwise you can order online from mass delivery of feeders at the commercial trade section i think. (:
