Default Mohamed Salah signs new long-term Liverpool deal

Liverpool Football Club can confirm Mohamed Salah has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The Egypt forward has committed his future to the Reds by putting pen to paper on the deal, a little over one year after originally arriving at Anfield from AS Roma.

Salah enjoyed a remarkable debut campaign with Liverpool, in which he scored an incredible 44 goals in just 52 appearances.

In doing so, he registered the second highest total of strikes in a season in the Reds’ history, just three behind Ian Rush’s record of 47 and surpassing Roger Hunt’s haul of 42.

32 of those came in the Premier League, setting a new record in a 38-game season and earning him the Golden Boot.

Salah was named as both the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year for his stellar efforts in 2017-18.

The 26-year-old also scooped Liverpool’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year at the club’s annual awards evening.

He became the first player in history to win three Premier League Player of the Month accolades in a season in March, while he claimed the Reds’ own Player of the Month prize an unprecedented seven times over the course of the campaign.

Salah’s heroics in helping Egypt qualify for the World Cup also earned him the African Footballer of the Year trophy and the BBC’s African Player of the Year trophy.

Default Jürgen Klopp: Salah's commitment is a sign for Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp believes Mohamed Salah's decision to a sign a new long-term contract is an indication of the direction in which Liverpool are heading.

The forward has committed his future to the Reds by putting pen to paper on the deal, just over a year after initially arriving on Merseyside from AS Roma.

Salah’s standing within the game has risen astronomically over the course of the last 12 months after he fired 44 goals in just 52 appearances for the club.

Upon his return to Melwood to begin pre-season training on Monday morning, Klopp explained to Liverpoolfc.com why he feels the news of the Egyptian’s new contract speaks volumes.

The boss said: “I think this news can be seen for what it is; rewarding a person who performed and contributed greatly for the team and the club last season.

“We want world-class talent to see they have a home at Anfield where they can fulfil all their professional dreams and ambitions - we are working hard together to achieve this.

“When someone like Mo Salah commits and says this place is my home now, it speaks very loudly I think.

“Equally, our commitment to him says we see his value and want him to grow even more and get even better within our environment.

“The key thing to remember is the best thing about Mo is that he never sees himself as being more important than the team or anyone else within it. He recognises his teammates and this club helped him achieve individual success last season. He sees the individual awards come because he is part of something bigger that is special.

“Mo reflects where we are as a team, I think. Last season was special with many special moments - but we want more.

“We want to be more successful and achieve more together - as the supporters sang so loudly, ‘we’re never gonna stop’. This has to be the attitude individually and collectively.”

Default Mohamed Salah signs new five-year Liverpool contract with no release clause

Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new five-year contract.

The Egypt international has been rewarded for his outstanding debut season for the Reds which saw him plunder 44 goals in 52 matches.

The ECHO understands there is no release clause in a contract which will keep him at Anfield until 2023. It puts him alongside Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk as the club's highest wage earners.

The news is a massive boost for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp's squad reconvene at Melwood for the start of pre-season training today.

Salah lit up Anfield following his £36.9million move from Roma last year. He played a starring role in Liverpool's run to the Champions League final and was crowned both PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year.

The 26-year-old had been linked with a move to Spain but he made it clear that he was happy and settled at Liverpool. Negotiations were swiftly concluded between Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards and Salah's agent Ramy Abbas.

With Firmino having also recently signed a new contract, the priority now will be to get Sadio Mane to pen an extension.

What Liverpool's rivals are doing in the transfer market - and what it tells us about the summer so far

Manchester City

Who have they bought? Nobody... for now. The Premier League champions have so far kept Sheikh Mansour's considerable chequebook closed, but that could change imminently, with Napoli's Jorginho reportedly set to sign in the coming days.

Who are they trying to buy? Jorginho has been Pep Guardiola's top target. The Italy midfielder was a player who interested Liverpool, only for the Reds to turn their attentions to Fabinho when a deal for the Napoli man looked unlikely. In the meantime, City have been in drawn out negotiations for Jorginho, and those talks are likely to lead to a positive resolution for City.

Guardiola's other top target is Riyad Mahrez, but again what looked like a straightforward deal has been delayed. City have had an offer for the Algeria attacker turned down by Leicester, who want Patrick Roberts included in any transfer.

What does it mean for Liverpool? City were already one of the best sides the Premier League has ever seen, and the additions of Jorginho and Mahrez will only make their squad stronger. Jorginho will provide more quality in the middle of the park and can be rotated with Fernandinho, who enjoyed a stellar season last term. Everybody knows about Mahrez's quality and for City to boast him as back-up would only underline their embarrassment of riches.

Manchester United

Who have they bought? Jose Mourinho has brought in Shakhtar midfielder Fred and Porto defender Diogo Dalot.

Who are they trying to buy? It seems as though Mourinho is looking for even more quality in the middle of the park and behind Romelu Lukaku. United have been linked with the likes of Willian, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and even Liverpool target Nabil Fekir. Toby Alderweireld is another player being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

What does it mean for Liverpool? United are busy freshening up their midfield and Fred will prove to be a clever signing. Dalot is something of an unknown but Mourinho's men certainly needed some youthful legs in the full-back positions. United could deal a big blow to Jurgen Klopp if they do indeed firm up potential interest in Fekir, but that does seem speculative for now.

Tottenham

Who have they bought? Again, nobody. Like many other sides, Spurs are saving their business until after the World Cup.

Who are they trying to buy? Tottenham have been credited with interest in the likes of Aston Villa's Jack Grealish and Lyon's Tanguy Ndombele, but much of the focus this summer has been on whether Mauricio Pochettino can keep Belgium internationals Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele.

What does it mean for Liverpool? The Reds were pipped to third place by Spurs this year but, as things stand, will be confident of pushing on next season and clawing their way above Pochettino's men. Tottenham will be feeling positive going into the new campaign, with Liverpool set to become the first visitors to their new ground - but the Reds will be happier with their transfer business so far.

Chelsea

Who have they bought? Another big spender yet to do any business - though it doesn't help that Antonio Conte's position still remains a mystery. Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri is expected to be confirmed as the new Chelsea manager shortly.

Who are they trying to buy? Conte reportedly had no input on Chelsea's transfer business, so the London club have continued to push ahead with new signings, though they have enjoyed little success so far. World Cup star Aleksandr Golovin is said to be on the verge of signing, with Juventus defender Daniele Rugani another target. Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker has emerged as a potential target, with Thibault Courtois said to be interesting Real Madrid.

What does it mean for Liverpool? It'd be a big blow if Chelsea were able to sign Alisson, especially with Liverpool put off due to Roma's price-tag - but that is a big if. Liverpool will be fairly happy to see a rival enduring a summer of turmoil and uncertainty while Klopp's side only continues to get stronger.

Arsenal

Who have they bought? New Arsenal boss Unai Emery has been a busy man, signing former Juventus full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer and Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno for just under £20m.

Who are they trying to buy? Emery is said to be a fan of Uruguay international midfielder Lucas Torreira and will pay around £25m to get the deal done. That's not all, Arsenal are also expected to sign Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos and the Gunners have been linked with Argentina international Christian Pavon and numerous other players as Emery reshapes his squad.

What does it mean for Liverpool? Despite Arsenal's aggressive approach to the transfer market, Liverpool needn't worry. The Gunners are going to need time for their signings to settle and Liverpool are much further ahead in their development. Although fans may keep one eye on Leno to see if he could have solved the Reds' goalkeeping problems.

Default The players who could help raise Liverpool funds for their summer transfer business

The madness of the transfer window is in full swing and the chatter among Liverpool fans is just who the Reds will be looking to sign this summer.

With Fabinho and Naby Keita through the door already, the Reds were keen on concluding a deal for Nabil Fekir from Lyon before an 11th hour collapse last month.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Moses Simon are more names who are the subject of interest from the Reds at present, but so far, it is just Keita and Fabinho who have been snared.

Liverpool's name is being mentioned alongside a whole host of players at present as Jurgen Klopp continues to assess his options.

But what of the players who might be making moves elsewhere?

We've taken a look at who might be able to raise the Reds some extra revenue for their assault on the transfer market this summer.

Daniel Sturridge

Perhaps an obvious one, but the Reds are ready to listen to offers for Daniel Sturridge this summer.

The striker endured a miserable loan spell at West Brom in the second half of last season as the Baggies were relegated from the Premier League.

Injuries have deprived Sturridge of so much football over the past four years , but he remains a gifted marksmen when fit and motivated.

Liverpool placed a valuation of £30million on Sturridge when the January transfer window was open, but they are unlikely to demand such a fee this summer for a player who has only scored 13 times in two years.

A more conservative estimate of £15m might be more realistic, but Liverpool may have to brace themselves for some bargaining from potential suitors.

Potential fee: £12m-£15m

Danny Ings

Another Liverpool striker who could be set for pastures new is Danny Ings.

After twice battling back admirably from serious knee injuries, Ings found it hard to dislodge Roberto Firmino as Liverpool's first-choice striker.

The ECHO revealed last week that Ings wants to move on in search of regular first-team football and his name has already been mentioned in connection with a number of Premier League clubs.

Liverpool were ordered to pay Burnley around £8million for Ings back in 2016 and a return of four goals in 25 appearances at Anfield has probably seen his value only marginally increase.

Potential fee: £10m

Simon Mignolet

Liverpool's goalkeeper situation is one of the most interesting subplots of their transfer dealings this summer.

The Reds are continually linked with a host of shot-stoppers across Europe and it could be all change for Anfield's glovesmen this summer.

The likes of Jan Oblak and Alisson have been regularly linked in connection with the Reds after Loris Karius' Champions League final nightmare.

One aspect which looks more certain however is Simon Mignolet's future. The Belgium international hasn't played for the Reds since New Year's Day and admitted earlier this week that he would hold talks over his future when he returns from the World Cup.

Liverpool signed Mignolet for a club-record fee for a goalkeeper of £9million in 2013 and with the shot-stopper now 30, they may only be able to recoup a similar outlay - even in these crazy transfer times.

Potential fee: £10m

Alberto Moreno

Twelve months ago, Moreno's Anfield exit seemed inevitable.

The Spaniard had just spent the season playing second fiddle at left-back to a midfielder in James Milner and was attracting attention from Napoli.

Moreno subsequently stayed put and worked his way back in the team before an injury saw Andy Robertson grasp his chance with both hands in December.

Such was Moreno's turnaround in fortunes, he was even drafted into the Spain squad for friendlies last year, but is unlikely to regain his place anytime soon at Anfield unless Robertson suffers an injury setback.

Liverpool were asking for around £12m for him last year and his value - particularly back in his homeland - has only increased since then.

Potential fee: £15m

Adam Lallana

A player who endured a miserable time last season, Lallana was restricted to just 15 appearances all season as injuries repeatedly robbed him of any momentum.

It's a big summer for the former Southampton captain. He's recently turned 30 and faces increased competition for places in midfield following the arrivals of Fabinho and Keita.

He is highly unlikely to break into the team in an unfavoured wide area too with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane forming two thirds of one of the best frontlines in world football.

Liverpool won't get anywhere near the £25m they paid for him back if they decide to offload Lallana however. A fee of around half that might be more reasonable.

Potential fee: £12m-£15m

Default Klopp: Lijnders' return is really important for us

Jürgen Klopp has expressed his delight at being able to welcome Pepijn Lijnders back into his first-team coaching set-up this summer.

The Reds announced on June 5 the Dutchman would be re-joining the backroom staff in a senior capacity after spending the second half of last season as manager of NEC Nijmegen.

Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s good. It’s very, very good. We sent him away for half a year to get very important experience and to have him back now feels just fantastic.

“When he came in the building, everybody was really delighted about that and was really happy about it.

“He’s a fantastic person and a fantastic coach, so it’s really important that we have him back and I’m really looking forward to working together with him.”

Default How Danny Ings' Liverpool exit could prompt striker rethink for Jurgen Klopp

A central striker didn't feature on Jurgen Klopp's summer wish list.

Roberto Firmino is Liverpool's undisputed No 9 and the manager was content with his back-up options in Dominic Solanke and Danny Ings as well as talented teenager Rhian Brewster.

Klopp also knew he had Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge returning to the club for pre-season after their loan spells away from Anfield last term.

However, Ings' desire to pursue a new challenge this summer raises the prospect of Klopp needing to re-evaluate.

Liverpool don't want to lose the former Burnley frontman but Klopp understands his desire to seek regular first-team football and won't stand in his way.

What the Reds have to factor into the mix is that Firmino, who scored 27 goals last season, is likely to miss most of the pre-season schedule. If Brazil reach the World Cup final he's not expected back at Melwood until a week before the Premier League opener against West Ham.

Brewster won't be fit until late August at the earliest and will need to be eased in gently after so long on the sidelines due to injury.

Solanke has plenty of potential but the 20-year-old remains a work in progress and only has one senior goal to his name.

If Ings leaves then Liverpool will certainly need more than Firmino, Solanke and Brewster in 2018/19.

It's difficult to see a way back for Sturridge with the Reds open to offers for the England striker, who endured an injury-plagued spell at relegated West Brom last season and is down to the final year of his contract.

But Origi has the tools to force his way into Klopp's plans and prove that he still has a future at Anfield.

Pre-season is make or break for the Belgium international in terms of his Liverpool career.

Klopp is keen to assess the 23-year-old whose underwhelming stint at Wolfsburg saw him score seven goals in 36 games.

The German coach always looks for the answer within his Liverpool squad before dipping into the transfer market.

If Origi can get back to the heights he hit in Klopp's first season at Anfield then he will be a viable alternative to Firmino and Liverpool won't be short in the striking department.

But if Ings departs and Origi flatters to deceive then Klopp will have to reconsider that summer shopping list.
