in my opinion, it will not be as widespread as Luohan.
Cos ranchu are not easy to keep. Extreme care has to be taken to ensure that your ranchu are in good help. On the other hand, Luohan are very hardy. any Tom, Dick or Harry can keep a Luohan with just a simple aquarium setup.

heheh.. dun say keeping .. even choosing ranchu is .. 10 times more difficult than choosing LH ..
ranchus from the same batch may differ greatly .. but LH from the same batch .. all like photostat like that ..

so .. each ranchu is really different .. and unique

thou preference may vary ... but generally ...

1st .. must consider top view or side view ..

then we have the back .. how incline is the curve .. whether smooth or not ...

then the .. distance betwn the tail and the body ..

then the head ..

how the fish hold it's tail ..

then we have the colours ..

then , for the Pros , the swimming style ..

I really dunno how many % are culled .. in my estimation . it'll be .. up to 70% ??? also depends on how stringent the breeder is .. and also his target market ....

goldfish has a high tendency to .. revert back to the wild form .. the ancestral godlfish .. in the West it's known at the .. comet ? 1 common undesirable trait ( in ranchu) is the scissors tail ..

if ranchu will be the next popular fish science must control the birth rate sia ... arboz very jialat ... the price drop like luo han ...
so .. even if goldfish lays tonnes of eggs , not many make it .. alot are culled and sold as .. FEEDERS !! , maybe soon low quality LH also suffer same fate ...

Its been around for a long time already, however, its fragmented i.e., Japanese, Chinese, Thai and 'con-chus'??? Somehow it might be good if all three groups can congregate sometime...so we get to see all three and everybody is happy!! Its takes a year at least to develop one fish...so this is for serious nuts only. However, you can start small!
