hi bros, please may i ask 2 questions.

can MHs be substituted for spotlights used to light gardens and outdoor areas like driveways?? they're sometimes used with motion sensors.
the bulb has a coil of metal inside and the bulb is long and thin (i think its a MH bulb but not sure). they are also very bright. so ya... can it be used for a planted tank?

also, there will be a 3-4 feet gap between the water surface and the light. so, will it be okay to hang the near the roof since its impossible to suspend a spotlight above the tank? please advise.

Thanks!!!

it's not only the brightness but also kelvins, lumens & par of the bulbs.
if just for viewing, no problems.
but if for planted tanks, may not be suitable

You are refering to a halogen floodlight which has a poor color rendering index. Objects will appear yellowish orange under these lightings.

MH bulbs have a internal metal halide gas bulb with 2 tungsten electrodes inside. They need a warm up time of at least 5-10mins to reach its max brightness and need a cooling time of 15-30mins to switch on when switched off

MHs are sometime use as flood lights. For those used together with motion sensor, chances are halogen type. Before MH became common, sodium light is used for green house.

They r suitable for planted as long as ur tank depth is 2ft n above (2ft cube). Mh can pentrate deep in the tank where pl cannot. As long as u know how to control ur algae level to the min then is ok. The most efficient mh is 150w the other mh is either under or over efficient. Most people use it in big tank.

Happy Aquarium and Bioplast at boon keng use MH lights. I would think MH lights are useful for the hobbyist or professional that is willing to spend.
