Toothless CASE asks for justification to raise taxi fares:

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...169761/1/.html

We know this hopeless body practically does not do much and action only when there is too much publicity. You only hear about them when tourists complained about being cheated.

their speech so repeatitive till everyone also know liao.

"we have looked into the proposed fare increment and think that it is fair and justifiable. we need to help the taxi drivers to make a living, therefore i think the fare increment should be allowed. anyway it is just 20 to 70 cents increment, it is not much."

2 months later cab rental price increase. PUI!

Default hi

Well I used to take 2 times taxi a wk to the MRT due to the lack of buses servicing my area, total spent about $40. After the last increase, I made an effort to woae up early to avoid missing the damn bus. Nowadays I only take about 4 times a month. I saved $20. Thanks to the increased, I have saved a small sum of money.

The morale of the story is, it doesnt matter how much the world has changed, we can always change our habits to better the world.

Cheers

to help taxi drivers, just reduce rentals and fuel cost which is the 2 main overheads....make story so nice to increase driver income, end up become justifiable for rental and fuel cost increase

Everything rise is due to market forces....but who actually owns the market and decides the price....

this is so full of nonsense.

they are trying to gain our sympathy and approval by saying how the increase will help taxi drivers, but in reality the companies are raising the costs to increase profit for themselves.

maybe as soon as 1 month after the increase the taxi rent costs will rise.

National Taxi Association's action seen by some as price-fixing bid

But others say group's call for taxi companies to also adjust fares does not breach rules

By Royston Sim

Did the National Taxi Association (NTA) breach anti-competition rules when it issued a statement urging taxi companies to follow ComfortDelGro's example and adjust their fares?

Legal experts yesterday offered mixed views on whether the association's statement could be deemed as an attempt at price-fixing.

On Monday, the association issued a statement shortly after ComfortDelGro announced changes to its basic fares, peak period surcharge, city area surcharge and call booking fees.

In it, the association, a trade union body representing some 12,000 drivers, said it 'is already in talks with other taxi companies and urges them to adjust their taxi fares as soon as possible'.

The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) has said it is 'very concerned' about the National Taxi Association urging other companies to adjust their fares.

Elaborating yesterday, its executive director Seah Seng Choon said: 'Such a call will work against the interest of consumers as choice will be limited since there is only one fare structure.

'Each company has its own cost structure so fares need not be the same. We hope to see free competition prevail in the marketplace.'

In response to media queries, the Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) said 'trade or industry associations should not become the vehicle to facilitate price collusion or price-fixing'.

Businesses are, however, free to determine their own prices independently.

It added that it does not comment on individual cases or whether it is investigating a case.

It also advised businesses and associations to familiarise themselves with the Competition Act, which sets out the types of behaviour that are prohibited as they are considered anti-competitive.

The Act seeks to protect businesses from anti-competitive practices. Last month, the CCS took action against 11 modelling agencies for collectively fixing their service rates.

Senior Counsel Alvin Yeo of Wong Partnership felt the association's statement did not add up to an attempt at price-fixing.

'The National Taxi Association expressed their view in an open statement, but it's up to the other firms whether they want to change their fares or not,' he said.

He noted that the Competition Act is aimed at cartel arrangements or agreements, where people strike up a deal in secret or collude to fix prices.

However, civil lawyer Sng Kheng Huat felt the National Taxi Association statement 'smacks of an attempt at price-fixing'.

He believes the National Taxi Association had contravened the Competition Act by asking the other taxi companies to follow ComfortDelGro, the largest operator with 15,700 cabs.

In a statement Tuesday, National Taxi Association president Wee Boon Kim said that 'it is up to each taxi company to decide if it wants to revise its taxi fare structure'.

Like drivers from ComfortDelGro, its members in other taxi companies are also facing pressures from higher operating costs, especially diesel prices, and cost of living, he said.

'They have hoped that National Taxi Association could act in their interest to relay their feedback and their concerns to their taxi companies, so that they may also enjoy better wages like other workers of Singapore,' Mr Wee said.
