Default planting plant

a simple and very newbie question - if you are using base fertilier and covering it with 3 inch of gravel, when you are planting, must the root poke all the way through to the fertilizer?

thanks.

For me NO.. just plant it as deep as you could.. the roots will slowly find its way to the fertilizer.

I think it depends on the plant too... vallisneria (for example) cannot just plug it straight into the gravel.
