i think it does matter, afterall the flowrate passing through the media does play an important role in cultivating BB. but i have not gone into depth with specific medias. anyone can share?

it depends what u're trying to achieve... mechanical filtration or bio?

if mech, then u should put more sponge to trap the solid waste.

if bio, then it really doesn't matter as long as u got suitable medium to cultivate BB.

if u want a balance of both, then the sponge should be placed to ensure that the big particles gets trapped first, followed by the smaller ones (i.e. coarse sponge first, followed by fine sponge medium) so that the filter doesn't get choked easily and the water can flow through your bio medium for optimum bio filtration.

no absolute right or wrong. only what u want to achieve, how u want to achieve it and whether it works or not
