Default How many koi to keep and kind of netting to prevent it from jumping out

How many Kois can I keep in a 6’x3’x1.5' FGT? Understand that a nylon net over the FGT is necessary to prevent kois from jumping out especially for new kois. Please suggest me a suitable size of the “eye” of the net so that it could prevent kois from jumping out and also not affecting too much viewing. I saw along Jalan Besar hardware shop the netting eye is range between 1cm sq to 3 cm sq; and also different type of net thickness are available. Can I use a thin net so that viewing is least affected? Thanks!

hi bro, firstly there is no fixed answer to your questions.
As for netting, what are you comfortable with. Fish net type or firmer plastic messing like you see at hardware shops. Both have advantages and disadvantages. l have used both before.
As for number of kois, it is dependant on size of kois and how good your filtration is.As a minimum try to have a filter that is at least 30% capacity of the FGT. The bigger the filtration the better water quality and can keep more or bigger kois.
There are hobbyists who can have several large kois in such a FGT.
Do read up on previous posts here on this topic.
Happy koi hobby!

Hi, thanks for reply.

My filter is about 20% of the tank size. Will put in more biohome, CR, water plants etc to boost up filtration. The filter has already been aged for two weeks with market prawn and Nutrafin cycle. Plan to get the kois from NKF this weekend. Maybe three 6"-kois as suggested by bro Ahpek.

Bro Bingkla, kindly share your experience on the advantage and disadvantages of the fish net type and firm plastic netting. Think of getting the fish net type, it has a better view on the fishes.

for a guide on filtration. i have a 200L sump , eheim 2260, eheim 2080. all stocked with Biomech, Substrat pro, biohomme plus, Lav. all eheim filter media except biohomme plus. cost around 700 for the media with some to spare. my tank is around 900 L. u can never have too much filtration for Koi, i also run a 36W UV. flowrate for all the circulation pump and wavemaker is around 13,000 L per hr. keep 6 koi, one giant guorami, 2 pleco, 1 gar and stingray

I used a fish not spread over the pond held tight all round the 4 sides so it doesn't sag into the pond. Visibility is great but after a few weeks the tightness made my net slowly tear and i had gaping holes. So after a while i changed to the stiff black mesh which has square holes. In order to support over the pond d I had to place strips of aluminum to hang the plastic mesh. It was unsightly and can't see the kois well. After about 6 months I removed them, cut them into strips and fixed them along the 4 sides each about 6 to 8 inch high like a wall all round.

I used to use 2 inches square galvanized steel net/fencing for my 11x4x2 ft fgt and water filled to almost the top after experiencing koi jumping out. However after constructing 6 inch wooded skirting around and on top of fgt, I stop using it and so far no more using netting. Rgds
