Java moss dun spend so much time tying... jus spread the moss onto wood, wet the moss by spraying/misting constantly...then tie the moss with sewing thread.

Paiseh...I thought is moss. Java fern also similar method.

Use sewing thread and coil around a few rizhomes by rizhomes( depending on which direction you want the leaves to face).
For me, I starting by tying a dead knot on the wood, then place the wet ferns few pieces by few pieces and slowly coil my way through.
Sweing thread is easier to navigate around the java ferns' leaves, roots and rizhomes and also easier to tie knots.
Remember to wet the leaves of the ferns constantly too.
Don't use fishing/nylon line. Once lose grip, they'll uncoil and you'll be back to sqaure one again(and you'll most prob F the heaven & earth...well at least I do. ).

Don't give up, I know very irritating to have this kind of things happen.
Find ways to secure your wood to bottom of tank first(can try john's 'rubber suction' method or tie rock below the bodwood), then take out and tie the ferns.

Oh..looks like 'egg crates' used to cover tank to prevent faunas from jumping out.

Remove your SAEs first, they will attack moss when deprieved of food.

Big/adult SAE won't bother with algae actually...I highly recommend that you remove them and make allowance for your moss to grow.

Sewing thread may rot away pretty fast if your pH is low...
