Default Asterophysus Batrachus aka Gulper Catfish thread #09

seems the interest for this catfish had somehow died down, let me just hit it up a bit.....

information below taken from www.tropicalfishkeeping.com

Gulper Catfish
Scientific Name: Asterophysus batrachus
Family: Auchenipteridae

About the Gulper Catfish
Species Type: Freshwater Fish
Category: Catfish
Care Level: Very Easy. Will tolerate a wide range of water parameters including pH, temperature and hardness. Can tolerate higher nitrate levels than other fish and is hardy enough to withstand the cycling process. Will readily eat prepared foods and has no special care requirements.

Origin: Marabitanos, Brazil

Compatibility/Temperament: 5

Description
A fish that can eat another twice it's size!
It grows to a length of about 25cm (9.84in)

The skin is very thin and flexible, allowing it to expand accordingly when it swallows a prey twice it's size.

Gulpers are hardy and easy to keep and can be trained to be hand-fed (Be warned that they may lose their hunting instinct)

As it is a type of Wood cat, they live to hide among driftwood

Gulper Catfish Diet
These fish prefer meaty food like fish and prawns. They take all forms of feeders though they will eat store bought prawns and fish.

If the Gulper has been trained to be handfed, it's favorites seem to be live feeder goldfish and store bought prawns

Size
Ideal water parameters for Gulper Catfish
The Gulper Catfish should be kept in an aquarium with the temperature ranging from 75 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit, and a Ph of around 6.3.

Mine should be a pair.. male 8" and female 9". Always seen them act as they were mating. Unfortunately I don't have a spare tank just for both of them
Do you have any idea anyone out there successfully bred gulper in the tank?
