Question on Live Rock?
I plan to set up a 3' tank with protein skimmer and canister filter. If I use live rock and living sand, does the tank have to be cycled before adding this?
Will ammonia levels affect the tiny living organism that live in the sand and rock? |

The sand and rocks should be added immediately, there is no need to cycle beforehand. This way, the bacteria can colonize the rocks and sand, besides your filter media.
Although the conditions are very toxic during the cycling period, somehow some living organisms in the rock and sand would survive and eventually populate the tank.
