Travel Smart to avoid jams
SINGAPORE - Lawyers from Rajah & Tann who get to work as early as 8am every morning can enjoy a free breakfast provided by the law firm.
But in time to come, they could have another carrot dangled in front of them: one that allows them to get in later than usual to their Raffles Place office, in order to avoid the morning rush-hour jam. Lawyer Rebecca Chew, who is a partner in the firm, said: "We like to engage our staff and our lawyers, to try and understand from them where our needs, as well as theirs, lie. "And hopefully, we are able to get a win-win situation." This might just happen, as Rajah & Tann is one of seven private and government organisations taking part in a pilot programme by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The Travel Smart programme aims to look into how the travel patterns of employees can be modified to reduce the rush-hour commuter crunch. It also hopes to spread travel demand more evenly during the busiest times of the day. An inter-ministerial workgroup on travel-demand management noted that there are two to three times more commuters travelling via MRT to the Central Business District during the first half of the peak hour - from 7.45am to 8.45am - than the half hour before. There are also 20 to 40 per cent more commuters in the second half of the peak hour, compared to the half hour after. This was revealed yesterday during the launch of the pilot programme at LTA's premises in Hampshire Road. It was attended by Minister of State for Transport and Finance Josephine Teo. The pilot will be conducted over the next two years, and will look into measures such as flexible work arrangements, off- peak travel and switching to other modes of travel, such as walking and cycling. It hopes to reach its target of 13 participating organisations. Other initiatives that encourage off-peak travel include Incentives for Singapore's Commuters, and transport operator SMRT's Early Travel Discount. Mrs Teo said Travel Smart will act as a complementary strategy to "smoothen" travel demand during peak periods. She said: "Even a shift of 10 to 15 per cent from the (peak hour) will make the commuting experience more pleasant." The Land Transport Authority has engaged private global provider of professional, technical and management support services AECOM to conduct the "Travel Smart" pilot programme. AECOM's associate director of transportation (Europe), Ms Elaine Brick, lists some perks which workers could enjoy: - Reduced journey times - Reduced travel costs - Coffee/breakfast discounts for early starters - Better work-life balance - Flexible work arrangements - Advice on active and more healthy travel - Improved facilities at the workplace, such as showers and lockers - Ensure parking for those with the greatest need to access a vehicle - Cash benefits, as alternative to company car/parking space - Competitions and prizes tsjwoo@sph.com.sg ------------------------------------ Told u already, it's your fault that MRT and bus is so jam.. |

They should solve the problem at the source.......halt the FT infiltrations and not offering a by-pass solution......
If I recalled correctly.....we did not have this overcrowding problem 5 years back...... |

You want 6m popution, then upgrade all the infrasturcture.
Constuct viaduct from SLE/CTE all the way to CTE tunnel, motorists using it pay $5 just like ERP to enjoy jam EXPRESSWAY. Same for other expressway. Upgrade the 20yrs old MRT signalling system. Less jam on the road, buses also faster, faster MRT after signalling upgrade. |

Very few companies will do this. To me, it is a good initiative to work staggered hours but these things work mostly on theory only. Practically most employees work beyond their official working hours. Some even till midnight during peak periods. Ask accountants during budget time for example. And many bosses equate the number of hours spent in the office as commitment to the company, which will be reflected in one's appraisal.
Thus, even if u start very early, u still end up late. The numbers will be too little to make an impact on the travelling patterns. |
